I'll try to limit my time on my soapbox, but we've spent the last thirty years or so telling people that you need college to get the jobs with real money so you can have the fancy houses and fancy cars and mistresses. I went to school for five years, switching majors part way through, and I personally didn't get shit out of the "college experience." Yeah, I work retail, and I frelling hate it, but apparently it's what I'm good at, and it's a paycheck. The Paint department manager in my store has a degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design. The Seasonal department manager has a political science degree from Capital University. There are no guarantees.

I wish I was a bit handier, too. I remember watching my grandpa build or fix stuff and if I tried something like that right now, it'd looked really half-assed. I really respect anyone who can build anything, especially without any sort of instruction manual.

My step-dad and teachers discouraged me from going into trades even though I really enjoyed building things. They kept telling me I was too smart to do that. I've heard the same thing from my co-workers in plumbing and in welding. I was given the impression that you only ended up in trades if you had no other options, no other skills. Even in the trades, there's a stigma.

I went back to school late (34) and loved the "experience." I pushed myself and graduated with high honors and $45K in debt. Unfortunately I don't believe the experience was worth $45K when I see what's going on in the corporate world.

My job will eventually be outsourced to someone without my skills at 1/3 the salary while I still pay off my student loans.

So I have this skin condition on the bottom of my feet that I have been getting light therapy for. About 6 weeks now twice a week. Today I went to the doctor to find out if I still needed to go. My feet looked exactly the same and I was hoping that he would just stop me.
The appointment kind of went like this.
doctor... well I want you to keep lighting your feet.
me. Ok sigh
doctor .... but I want to give a alternative medicine a try at the same time.
me. ok
doctor... I will have the nurse come in to give you a shot in a few minutes. Now I want to tell you up front that it is going to really hurt and your ass may go numb for two days.
me.....

doctor.. she will be in here in about ten minutes.
Me left alone in a room...

Nurse comes in the room holding and I swear to you this is the truth a freaking 2" needle.
me... ummm why is the needle so long
Nurse.. Lay on the bed. the needle is that long so you don't end up with a dimple on your rear.
me... umm I have a lot of dimples can I get a smaller needle if I don't care if I get another one?
Nurse.... NO :lol

If after this second round of lighting and medication my feet still look the same (horrible) then I have to start taking some kind of chemo medication. I will be stopping before that happens regardless of what my feet look like

Feet... open wounds...

This after reading Peter Watts' blog. (He had some nasty, flesh-eating thing going on and posted pics.) And I thought I wasn't particularly squeamish.

Queasiness aside, I do hope everyone's feet heal up. Sounds painful.

Trains

A major line cuts our county in half, so if you want to go just about anywhere, you have to cross it at some point. Trains come out of the port at Long Beach and head east and vice versa. Most have around four engines and upwards of about 150 carriages.

Last night I was sat at the lights, waiting for one to pass by, on its way back to port, and once it was done the barriers stayed down and we waited and waited until another train arrived, heading east, traveling reeeeeal slooooooow. I put on some music, and it took him the entire length of Muse's Sing for Absolution and Stockholm Syndrome to finally get up to speed. That's about 8 minutes, I think.

Ohhhhhh.....
