Man, yesterday I had winds knock my power out for 12 hours and had trees down around my house. I almost started bitching about it, then I saw what happened to those people down south and I shut the hell up.

If you think you're having a bad day, just watch the news footage. It looks like someone dropped bombs on those cities down there. I've never seen anything like it.

What you've seen on the news only begins to give you an idea of the damage. I live in one of the hardest hit areas, but fortunately our subdivision only suffered minor damage (missing shingles, damaged fences, debris everywhere, etc.). Within an hour or so timespan, we had four tornadoes go just east or west of us and one that reportedly jumped over our subdivision. The was extensive damage to a community just south of us, an area just Nw of us and damage (large trees uprooted and laying on homes) on the other side of the street outside our subdivision.

One community was destroyed in 95 by a tornado, they rebuilt, then got hit again on Wednesday. Streets are still blocked by downed trees and power lines. Our entire county (500K people) is without power. Originally they said 3-5 days to have it restored, then changed to 5-7, now it's 6 days at the earliest. 16K miles of power lines were destroyed in addition to all eight incoming feeds of electricity. 70+ towers are gone, countless other electricity supplying structures, etc.

Water is still OK as long as people will conserve, which they generally aren't. No gas can be pumped, most stores closed due to no power. Fortunately, neighboring counties have gas and food. Too many sightseers are driving around. There is a dusk to dawn curfew in effect, violators will be arrested.

Basically it's beyond terrible. I can't imagine what's it's like for those who lost everything.

All I have for communication is my Blackberry, but at least I have some connectivity. Verizon service was down two nights ago, but back now, just in time for ATandT to go down. More details in later days when things start to improve and thins start to retrun to "normal."

Wow Daddy Goth - I'm glad you and your family are OK.

Television only gives us a glimpse of what's going on so I can hardly imagine how much worse it really is. The fact that you have gawkers really pisses me off.

We had 4 confirmed tornadoes here in my area but thankfully they were all in sparsely populated areas. It was scary listening to the constant warnings on television. I would never have thought that where we are now would get tornadoes.

Well, I never thought I could my wife off that badly. I'm going back to school to get my degree in Asian Studies. Specifically Thailand. In order to get my degree I have to spend a semester there. She's not happy with that.

I still have enough of my G.I. Bill (just over 3 years) that I can conceivably get my Master's if I push myself. In order to do so, I have to take at least 5 classes a semester for the next year and a half to get my Bachelor's. Maybe less once they re-evaluate my navy transcript. Which will leave me with about 18 months to get my Master's. But in order to do so, I won't be able to work. And that's what is pissing her off.

Well, power still hasn't been restored in my community, but the overall area is slowly getting power restored. I think around 70% have power now. Since a local library has power, I left the house to recharge everything since everything was running low again.

There's going to be cleanup and rebuilding for a long time here. Fortunately, communities are coming together and helping each other.

There are still gawkers and I'm sure that will continue as more people are able to get around. Gas is pumping in many areas now, so I figure the gawkers will be out in force.

It's amazing that people who were simply without power on the night of the storm, after all the bad weather had passed, were calling radio stations wanting to know where they could get food. These were people who just simply couldn't live on dry foods for a few days. Except for the couple of days when I was at my MIL's and the first day after the storm when we cooked some things on our grill, I survived on water, crackers, granola bars, chips and PB&Honey sandwiches. It wasn't a great diet, but you do what you have to in times like that.

There were also a number of people trying to make a quick buck by calling stations advertising they had cooked meals. However, the stations had said to only call if you were donating items and food. One local idiot called trying to sell in-ground tornado shelters. There were some gas stations taking advantage of people as well in neighboring counties. One in particular usually had the same price as its neighboring station. However, the neighboring station couldn't process credit cards and was "cash only" for 3.64 a gallon. The neighboring station took advantage, jacking its price to 3.89 a gallon since they could process credit card transactions. They knew most people didn't have cash and/or couldn't get it since many banks were closed. As soon as the neighboring station could process credit card transactions, the other station immediately dropped its price to a few cents higher than its competitor.

Schools are slowly opening and my sons are anxious to go back. I'm ready to go back to work as well.

Of course, with no power, I haven't been able to do much Crossroad Press work. However, I was able to finish edits on a Jack Ketchum book and am finishing some on another today.

Overall, things are much better than they were about a week ago. Again, my family was fortunate in that we avoided any serious damage to our property. However, please keep those less fortunate in your thoughts and prayers as it's going to be a long recovery time for some of them.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people see an opportunity to take advantage of people during times of distress.

Finances. Plus the flood from a couple years ago. I tried to live with friends, but it only made things worse. I don't know what they were thinking, but they assumed that once I didn't have a place to live I had tons of money and could afford a brand new vehicle as well as go to school full time. I was trying to save up for two things: a working car and a divorce attorney. It just didn't work out.
