I liked Shutter a lot. It's really creepy and not as cryptic as other Asian Horror Films (like The Red Shoes and Infection). The remake is just awful.

I liked Population 436 as well. I also really enjoyed Wind Chill. It was subtle but I thought it had some good creepy momments in it.

Laurel, 30 Days of Night kicked ass. At first I thought, oh crap another vampire movie, but the vampires in this flick are what freaked me out. They were some of the creepiest vampires I've seen on film.

They freak me out just thinking about them ... I'm scared now.

I enjoyed 30 Days of Night, but Tim Lebbon's novelization of it was better. Mainly because he had a polar bear scene that they didn't put in the movie, which made me really mad. But except for that, it was good.

I saw a few this weekend. Here are my mini reviews:
1. Inside. OMFG. Words can't describe this film. Starts off slow with a lead character you cannot seem to feel any empathy for. Just a very bitter and angry woman. Then her ordeal begins. It's creepy at first as she's being stalked, and then spirals into madness straight out of something we'd see in the pages of a Laymon or Ketchum novel. Tension is taut and palpable throughout so you are riveted to your seat until the final disturbing shot. Not for the faint of heart, this is one of the most intense films you will ever see.

2. Shutter. Like many Tartan Asia extreme films, I was worried that it would be full of truly awful acting and the usual ghostly girl with black hair moving in spastic and jerky motions towards the next intended victim. Happily, this film seems to be a cut above the standard cloth with a story of revenge and love from beyond the grave. The lead actor is likeable in a smarmy, slimeball kind of way and he has enough charisma to make us follow him as he must relive the horrible thing his friends did to a shy girl he dated and the eventual retribution that must inevitably follow. Worth watching for the story, the shocks and even the acting.

3. Cloverfield. I have to say, I loved it. A monster terrorizing NYC sounds like it would be played to death, but thanks to a great script, believable characters and a thrill a minute plot it works and works well. A cast of mostly unknowns and a premise of the whole film being shown through the lens of a video camera only heighten the realism as we feel each tremor and move along with the characters. A popcorn flick that I'd highly recommend.

4. The Mist. Wow. I liked the story and heard good things about the movie, so I figured it would be great. Wrong. There were so many plot hiccups and unrealistic responses by characters that I actually found myself getting annoyed more than midway through. But what killed the movie for me was an ending so poorly written it's amazing King allowed Darabont (the director) to deviate from his story's original ending. Why was it so bad? Well...<SPOILER ALERT> first off, the survivors hardly saw any monsters on their drive south. They seem to have run out of gas pretty close to where they started. That was the first gaffe. A full tank of gas could have gotten them well past Rhode Island from their starting point in Maine, and the mist did not spread that far. Second, after running out of gas and not being torn apart or attacked by monsters, they decided to kill themselves instead of trying to go on by foot. Survivors and fighter always push on. it was way too simple to have them all give up trying to get away. Third, after the main character kills the others, he exits the car so a creature could kill him and ...surprise...the mist lifts and suddenly he sees a ton of military vehicles coming down the road from where they had just come...one of them even carrying a woman who waltzed out of the store into the mist in search of her kids who also were miraculously alive as well. How was it that the survivors drove a car south and yet saw no monsters or military until they commit suicide and then the mist clears and all is well? Shameful that the movie going public could accept such tripe.

Yeah, TT, imagine Jack Ketchum and Richard Laymon on an overdose of acid and demonic speed, where both are locked in a room and only allowed to come out after the most psychotic story has been written: it could very well be Inside. (I know Richard Laymon is no longer with us, but you get my point.)

Or, you could say-Inside: not for those who faint at the site of a paper cut.

In my DVD player tonight is the remake of Day of The Dead, just out. And I love zombie flicks when they're done right, so if it sucks, I shall use the DVD as a frisbee and not return it.

Horrordude, don't set high expectations. Dread Central did not give it a good review, and their web site is pretty spot on for horror.
