The Glass Rainbow by James Lee Burke.

Burke's latest in a moving, beautifully written thriller. Like all of Burke's novels, the plot is simply the frame on which he hangs an melancholy examination of aging cop Dave Robicheaux's longing for the Louisiana of his youth and Robicheaux 's acceptance of his own mortality. Of course, Burke's recurring theme of Big Business and the wealthy wiping their feet on the backs of the poor is here, as well as a hint of the supernatural. Did I mention that's it's a hell of a thriller, too? Despite an ambiguous ending, it's easily the most satisfying novel I've read in a while.
