Horror translated from the Japanese seems most common. Maybe the Japanese share a love for the horror genre with the Americans and British that other cultures just don't feel as much. Suzuki Koji with his Ring novels is popular. I've recently purchased Lairs of the Hidden Gods Volume One: Night Voices, Night Journeys edited by Asasmtsu Ken. It is a collection of tales in the Cthulhu Mythos from Japan. The first two short stories were very interesting, set during WW2 from the Japanese prescriptive, but involving Lovecraftian horrors. I have a novel called Cold Skin byAlbert Sanchez Pinol translated from the Spanish dialect of Catalan, but haven't read it yet. A huge environment horror/science fiction novel called The Swarm by Frank Schatzing was translated from the German last year. The must be others. I don't know of any horror from the French. But maybe there are untranslated classics about mutant cheeses, probably called something like Attack of the Camembert People. |

I know of like fantastic, magical realism senses. But Gabriel Garcia Marquez and a lot of South AMerican writers I know of don't write horror, per se. Japan makes a lot of sense, but I didn't know of the writers you pointed out. My knowledge of Japanese fiction is largely limited to Haruki Murakami and Kobo Abe. Still, good suggestions. Thanks! |

Latin American Magical Realism is its own genre, not really horror. The Obscene Bird of Night by Jose Donoso comes close. It is the story of the last member of an aristocratic family, a monstrous mutation protected from the knowledge of his deformity by being surrounded by other freaks for his companions. A great novel no matter what genre label it carries. |
