I first started reading because, as a very young child, I would watch my sister, who is five years older than me, reading Three Investigator books. They always had such eerie looking covers, that I was facinated and wanted to know what the story was about. The first novel I ever read was The Three Investigators and The Mystery of The Laughing Shadow. It's cover alone sold me on it. I ended up checking out every book in the series in my elementary schools library. In fact the librarian complained to my parents that she thought I should expand my horizons and read something else. This was not a school assignment, mind you. I was reading FOR FUN! My mom told her that she was just glade that I loved to read and that was the end of it. :)

As far as horror, I've loved it from the time I was born I think, and The Three Investigator books always had kind of a horror slant to them, so I guess that counts as well.

Although I read mostly fantasy as a kid, I still watched whatever scary stuff they put on TV. Horror is just darker fantasy, right?

Anyway, I got around to reading CHRISTINE by King and I was hooked from that moment on.

Matt:

I was a huge fan of the Three Investigators, Encyclopedia Brown, as well as the Hardy Boys. In fact, for a while I wanted to be a private investigator. I wrote about that crazy time here:

With horror, it started with horror comics and Chiller Theater on Channel 13 in Huntington, WV. Then I graduated to Ray Bradbury and any paperback anthology I could find with scary stories. When Stephen King hit big, I was ready. My first Kings were Salem's Lot and The Stand.

:p indeed! :D

No, I was meaning treat it like an actual form of fiction instead of kiddie lit. I know it sounds like a crazy idea, but what if we had say, a horror novel with multiple endings.

Celebratory

Alas, poor Beowulf. I hated it too, but much later, in graduate school, I came to love it as both a monster story, and the fact that Seamus Heaney lent his considerable poetic skills to translating it from Anglo Saxon to English while keeping it an alliterative verse poem.

I once had a teacher who was so stoked on the Brontes and such that she disdained "best sellers" both contemporary and historical, like Dracula or Frankenstein.

Sounds like a fun teacher. I do believe I was rather lucky in school because I had several teachers who, when I reflect back on it, really loved to teach. I had several fun english teachers, and I remember a history teacher who had a great sense of humor and who knew and related lots of interesting tid bits that weren't found in the text book about what we were studying at the time. Many of my fellow students didn't like him and I never understood why. I always found his extra bits of facts facinating. :)

There used to be some of those kinds of books put out by TSR and others. I actually have a shelf full of them. Steve Jackson put out a series that was very good as well. You can find some gaming supplements that were solo adventures that used that formate to enable a person to game by themselves. I have one that was put out by a company called Role Aids ,from back in the 80's.
