Post subject:  How many words a day

I have been working on a novel for a little under two weeks now and have found that I am averaging about 2,000 words a day. I have never fully completed a novel, but at being close to 15,000 words I am getting closer than I've ever been. One of my problems is that I feel sometimes I'm not writing enough, but I like what I write (at least so far). Are there any suggestions that anyone here can offer me. Am I writing enough? I'm not sure how long things like this are supposed to take since it's my first full attempt. Thanks!

Calm down. An average of 2,000 words a day is normal for most writers. I write at that rate. Frederik Pohl and (I think) Harry Harrison -- describing their work in that great collection 'Hell's Cartographers' -- confessed to that rate. Most writers, when asked about their work rate, say "2,000 words a day, on average."

In other words, it's pretty much industry standard. So you're doing fine ... escpecially if you like what you write. Just finish a novel, already!

Yeah, 2,000 words a day is solid progress. Sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less... depends on the "flow" of the day. I usually try to turn out a complete scene in each sitting, but if I run out of steam before I'm through, I come back to it the next day. Don't force it just to make quota... that's like :|.

I think 2,000 words a day is not just okay; it's more than okay. But don't push so hard or you'll end up burning out before you ever get to the finish line! I think what's more important is that you make it your goal to write every single day and not worry about how many pages you're cranking out. For me, my daily goal is, and has been, to sit down each day and write at least one page. Sometimes that's all I write--sometimes it's much, much more than that. It's how I manage to get my novels done. The key is to leave the keyboard feeling inspired, not tired. Look at it this way, if you write just one page a day, in a year you'll have a complete manuscript--or at least a first draft of one. A novel in a year is pretty respectable, especially if you're also holding down a full time job. Slow and steady wins the race... and all that other crap :roll Know what I mean?

Hope this helps,

Jesus, 2000 a DAY? When really blazing on something, short story or novel, I usually call 1000 about average, and I'm pleased with it. Wow, I can't imagine doing 2000 every day on something, but I know it's a fair average, and I admire the hell out of anyone who can do it. Hopefully one day I'll be able to catch up.
