I, too, was just recently featured on DemonMinds (Art, by J.W. Williams, in the Spring of 2008 issue), and I consider that published. And I believe that one of your stories was going to be published, in print, for their Best of Spring 2008 issue, available on Amazon, so I don't think there is any question there. |

Yes, but it's kind of considered a "vanity press" I think the official world of publishing only considers works that are published under major publishing companies and are sold in brick and mortar stores (From Borders to Walmart) But it's still generally accepted that if your a vanity press or striclty online that you haven't "made it" yet. Though there are some agents who might look at your novel proposal a little more seriously if your "in print" and not just online which makes for a real catch-22 (although many literary magazines let the authors list in their bio's where their online works can be seen) But yes--- I do consider myself "published " because it's on paper and paper is paper (I.E. "published") in any country ![]() |

Published is published. Doesn't matter how. That's how I see it. Arguing over what "counts" as real publication could go on forever. Do people have access to the material without you physically handing it to them? (IE, Internet, Podcast, Etc) - then yes, it's published. |

Being published online is better than never being published. If you can get a story on a high-profile website then you can establish a fanbase. The same way writers start in the small-press. I published Tim Lebbon 12 years ago in a magazine I printed at home, he wasn't paid then, look where he is now. It all counts, and should go on your writer's cv. |

Published is published - yes, to a certain extent. Still, the bulk of online publications aren't necessarily going to impress an actual publisher who is considering giving you actual money for your work. And too, you have to realize that once your story has shown up online - it shall be considered published - so if you get the opportunity to sell it to an actual paying publisher they will pay you at the reprint rate - if they even buy it at all. It is something to consider. For example, if I published my "mummified vampire" story on Uncle Bob's Blood 'n Guts Gore-o-zine website for exposure, and next month a brand new All-mummified-vampire anthology is announced at Tor Books - and I find out they are looking to pay pro-rates for original mummified-vampire stories - I am most likely shit out of luck. It's a little like dating. If you sleep one night with the town bicycle you are apt to smell of old rubber for the rest of your life. You will find it hard to get the other girls to take you seriously once you've tomcatted with the local anything-in-pants-will-do. A reputation is like a shadow. Once you've made one it will follow you around. Be careful who you date. Be careful who you submit your manuscripts to. This shit will catch up on you. |

It depends on who owns the intellectual rights to the work after it's been published online. If the online publication includes a contract or agreement that covers issues such as copyright then you could say that you're officially published. Even still, if the idea is to gain exposure, just get your work in as many places as you can. Just be careful about re-printing the story afterward. |

Having stories published online non-paid by a little guy isn't as impressive as being published in print mass-market or by a highly esteemed magazine/webzine, but I would say use what you got. I don't think it would hurt to mention small webzine credits to a major and it might help. Also, right now we're in a state of flux where everything's going electronic and mass market publishers are dying. Eventually there might not be any majors, anyway. Only people buying from various small places. A website and a Kindle. As for developing a bad reputation, as Steve Vernon points out, maybe there's some truth in that, but wouldn't a rational editor generally look at the work, more then the author? |
