I know Ed wouldn't mind me starting a thread to let others offer their sympathy and condolences to horror author/Edward Lee board poster, Bryan Smith. As many of you probably already know(especially if you've visited the Keenedom) Bryan Smith's wife, Rachael Wise, passed away last week. I've never met Bryan, nor did I ever get a chance to meet his wife, but from all I've heard she was a terrific lady. Bryan is a real stand-up guy, too, so I gather. He's a great horror writer and I've heard his wife's smile was so bright it could light up a room. Bryan: I'm so very sorry this has happened to you. I wish I could take away your pain. I offer you my deepest sympathies. I've never lost anyone close, so I can't imagine what you must be going through. I pray that Rachael is in a better place and I know that with time things will get better. We're all behind you buddy and you're in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers. Take care of yourself, Travis |

Wow. I believe that's the most beautiful thing I've ever read, Bryan. That truly shows how much you love her and miss her. My heart goes out to you, pal. |

In case anyone here hasn't seen this: “On April 28th, 2011, the annual World Horror Convention was held in Austin. It was an overwhelmingly successful convention by all accounts. One person, however, was not in attendance but was the subject of much discussion: Bryan Smith. The author of multiple horror novels had very recently lost his beloved wife to a long-term illness. Bryan is well known and well liked in the literary horror community, and there was an outpouring of empathy for him. Bryan recently wrote about his wife here: http://thehorrorofbryansmith.blogspot.com/ Because we were in Austin, Tx, we bought him a hat from a Western wear store. Then, we proceeded to fill the hat with signatures of many of the attendees. If a person was an author, an artist, an editor, a publisher, or a dealer (many people fell into multiple categories) they were asked to sign the hat. To get an idea of some of the attendees, check the web site: http://whc2011.org/ Ultimately, roughly 135 signatures were gathered on the hat, which was to be auctioned off to get Bryan a little extra money toward the bills any serious illness accrues. This is that hat, and this is the auction. The hat is an extra large wool Dorfman Pacific Scala classic “putty” style Western hat. It has been signed with Sharpie Rub-a-Dub markers (designed to withstand washing). The hat is “crushable felt”, designed to return to the correct shape if bent. Signatures include: Peter Straub, William F. Nolan, Joe R. Lansdale, F. Paul Wilson, Jack Ketchum, Lawrence Person, Brian Keene, Joe Hill, John Picacio, Bill Crider, John Skipp, Chad Savage, Del Howison, Jeff Strand, Lynne Hansen, Yvonne Navarro, Weston Ochse, Simon Clark, Steve Niles, Carlton Mellick III, Joe Wight, Willie Siros, Gene O’Neill, Nick Mamatas, Wrath James White, Lee Thomas, Jerad Walters, Gord Rollo, Brad Sinor, Mary SanGiovanni, John Everson, Chesya Burke, Richard Dansky, Sarah Langan, Jenny Orosel, Rain Graves, Bailey Hunter, Scott Cupp, L.L. Soares, Brett Savory, R.J. Sevin, Jeff Burk and many, many more. All money from the auction is to go to Bryan Smith, with aid from his current publisher Deadite Press.” Please pass around this link and, if you can, bid. |
