Sorry if this idea has been discussed in other threads, I'm just curious. So, for Christmas I got my Mom a Kindle (with every intention to use it for myself as well) and while showing her how to work it, I stumbled across Mr. Lee's inventory of available books for download. Right away I downloaded Lucifer's Lottery so that I could finish my Infernally Yours collection. I also used it to show her how to switch through pages and what not, and how to turn on the "read to me" function of Kindle. Just now I purchased The Bighead and I plan to purchase more in the near future when I finish catching up with my other reading. My question is: Do you feel that digital books/e-readers cheapen the whole experience of books? I know a lot of Mr. Lee's books are either out of print, or rare editions, and the like. For a lot of you here, it seems like that's half the fun of actually being able to read his books: the chase and adventure to find them. As with my purchase of The Bighead, I know I probably wouldn't be able to track it down in local shops anywhere or have it shipped to me without spending $$$, so I feel kind of dirty and cheap for opting out and buying it for the Kindle. It feels like I haven't really "earned" the right to read the book, or that I really "own" the book because it's not actually in my hands... it's in my e-reader. What's everyone else take on the subject? and go. ![]() |

As a techno dinosaur, I never liked the idea of e-books; it's depressing for me to think of "books" existing in some form other than a stack of paper bound by a cover. Additionally, I always predicted that Kindle and other readers would never take hold, which the current time proves me dead wrong. The digital book age has dawned whether I like it or not, and actually I'll completely contradict myself now by saying that I LOVE digital books becuase I'm starting to make some formidable scratch from them! Take care! Edward Lee |

I just got a kindle for christmas and I have lots of books on it. I love that I can sample books for free-not yours of course-and if i like them I can buy them, and if not then i'm not stuck with them. I bought LL and also The Minotauress so far but plan to add more when I finish those. For me, i'm on a small budget so it is nice that I can read them now and when I get the money to buy the HC's later, I can. ~Tony Beals |

I was pretty anti-ereader for a while. I got one last year and love the way it allows me to read authors that I wouldn't normally be able to afford (feeding the kids comes first, unfortunately ![]() ![]() |

I have to admit that I'm old school. If it wasn't for the the demise of of Leisure's mass publications at the time that Lucifer's Lottery was supposed to be released, I would have never of downloaded an e-book. I've already commented on this in a couple of different posts so I won't regurgitate. My main concern is that books will go the way of movies and cd's. People stealing them. But at the same time, it's not like we can stop technology or the economy. I don't own a Kindle or a Nook or a Sony Reader. However, kindle is free for my macbook (and probably for windows based machines also). I can adjust page color, font, whatever to make it look like a book and after fucking around with the settings, I don't mind the e-book as much as I thought I would. I even joked with my wife about how some books would be better in digital form. This conversation came about after my mom bought me Under The Dome, by Stephen King, for Christmas. The book is over a 1000 pages and pretty fucking hard to get completely comfy with because of the weight. But the problem is that you can take a book to the shitter, to the lobby of whatever appointment you're dreading, etc. I don't like packing my macbook anywhere it doesn't need to be. Bottom line. I can't control what todays generation and current technology dictates. While I'll always prefer reading books the old fashioned way, when my taxes come back in a few days, I will buy a Kindle. It's always better to look at the glass half full. Maybe the next time someone gives me a book that weighs more than grandpa's dick in Family Tradition, I won't feel like I just got off of work or out of the gym. |
