I live like 20 miles from Cross Plains and come this June they'll have Robert E Howard Days and I plan on going as I've never been before. And to be honest, I've never read anything from him but I'd like too. He's buried in the town that I live in, Brownwood and last month I visited his grave. It's neat that a well known writer lived in such a nowhere sort of place. Also writer, Katherine Ann Porter is buried in my town as well. So weird.... |

His family buried REH and his mom on the same day. I don't know if they buried them side by side or at least within the same vicinity. I first became acquainted with his writing through his Kull stories. They're really good, but Conan is definitely his best output in my opinion. His writing had become very poetic by that point and his imagination was in total overdrive. Del Rey recently reprinted a lot of his work in reasonably priced, illustrated, trade paperbacks. Great way to check out some of his work. |

Wow! Thanks for posting those! I'd like to visit him myself sometime, in a manner of speaking. Definitely checkout some of the Del Reys - particularly The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian. |

What a TREMENDOUS testement! Howard certainly wrote some of the best prose of the day. I'm particularly fond of his HPL pastiche "The Black Stone." Edward Lee |

Mr. Lee et al, Many thanks for the response! I had thought about De Sade but was unfamilar with DFS initials for his full name. I appreciate the information. I really enjoy looking for these references in your work. Especially the Lovecraftian ones .... Also have caught our old buddy from Wisconson, Eddie Gein showing up a time or two! Have certainly noted the venerable Webley .455 which has shown up in nearly every work of yours. Picked up on this before the door knockers! I caught the Howard typwriter reference but not the .38 ACP. Howard was a firearm enthusiast and owned a fair number of weapons. Thanks to those who posted up the photos which are cool as well. I like you also enjoy The Black Stone, excellent Mythos stort. Also very fond of Pigeons from Hell. A great short horror story ..... |
