I am rather curious about the door knocker and its origins. I suppose maybe thats a little silly? Maybe I am reading too deep into a piece of brass. Anyway I checked home depot and they didn't have any ![]() ![]() |

Folks: that's actually a very cool idea, though I doubt that most readers would get it. (Only a few people have even noticed the mysterious recurring knocker.) (And thanks for reminding me! The knocker has yet to be added to my "nun" book!) As for its inception, as I recall, in the mid-80s I was driving to my nightjob as a security guard near annapolis, but my trek took me down a road called Old 450, a ten mile long creepy road that winds through the woods between Crofton and Annapolis. Anyway, as I was driving down this road I got the idea for my novel Ghouls (Old 450 appears in the book as Route 154--another road that recurs in other books sometimes, named, because that same night I was listening to an album on my tape deck called 154, by a the alt-rock band Wire). Anyway, when I get to Annapolis, I have to go by my boss's house to pick up some papers, and it was the first time I'd ever been to his house. So I knock on his front door, and--wouldn't you know it?--there's the knocker, and a very creepy knocker indeed. Hence, the knocker's appeared in almost every book of mine because it's sort of a good luck charm that I relate to the novel that essentially started my career. Later! Edward Lee |

Damn, I thought for sure I'd seen that knocker on a house at 742 Evergreen Terrace. |
