ED (and everyone else): Started reading CELLARS. Dig it and your intro (amusing story by the way) . I'm a John Shirley fan sense he introduced me to just how far you can go with WETBONES.....Well thats not entirely true....Way before that I read a book called IMAGE OF THE BEAST by Philip Jose Farmer (was and probably is a personal fav sci-fi writer). It came out in 1968, and i read it at least 20 years ago. Are you famliar with it? That book might be the birth place of hard core horror (with a bit of a sci-fi edge, which I know you have been known to you ) And the novel has an image or motif which i can imagine showing up in SLITHER |

Another Shirley fan! Cool! I have yet to pick up the new edition of CELLARS. I'm curious what he changed. |

I've got Demons, Cellars and Crawlers on my shelf at work, getting closer and closer to being owned by me, is he hardcore? I only stumbled across John Shirley when I found Ed had done the intro for Cellars. |

Jack -- I would definitely start out with WETBONES. That one is mucho hardcore. Im diggin CELLARS, but have not read as much of it as I would like sense my Tigers are in the World Series...I would also recommend IN DARKNESS WAITING and his short story collection BLACK BUTTERFLIES (excellent collection, one of my favs.)....I read CRAWLERS and liked it. The plot was very cool, but in my eyes it was an attempt at a more mainstream novel. Kinda reminded me of earlier Steven King. Ya know: a shit load of characters (even a mentally challenged one) making their final "stand" at the end (and not so hard core)....You got to read WETBONES!!!!! |

Yeah start with WETBONES, it's how I got started on his work as well. Maybe you can tell I liked it? BLACK BUTTERFLIES has some great stories, especially in the second half of the book. Also worth checking out is his collection REALLY REALLY REALLY WEIRD STORIES. It lives up to that title and the story JUST LIKE SUZY contained within its pages is easily the sickest, most disgusting and most hardcore thing John's ever written. It's really rather unbelievable. |
