I've been reading a ton of their books recently (they are cheap and a lot of them are really fuckin' good), not just Ed's stuf but also Waggoner, Laymon, Keene, Jacobs, Lebbon etc. etc. and I'm starting to wonder where those guys draw the line. I mean a lot of their books get pretty damn outrageous with both the violence and the sex. Would they really turn down a book like BIGHEAD* or GAST? Is there some kind of list they hand to signed writers with things that are big no-nos?

*Tim Waggoner's PANDORA DRIVE even has character growing a monster cock and fucking people to shreds with it.

I dont really know. Leisure released Survivor and that is easily one of the most hardcore stories I've ever read. It has a man being raped by a Dildo covered in Razor Blades and a baby being mutalated.

It doesnt get more hardcore than that. :x

Suvivor was a fucking blast, and let us not forget Mr. Ketchums "Girl Next Door" perhaps not as hardcore as getting ass fucked with a razor blade dildo, but still a disturbing book none the less.

Indeed, Leisure does push the limit with extremity (and Survivor was especially explicit and very good, too) but personally I'm referring to the really scatological stuff. The sex in GAST I suspect would be deemed too smutty for the readership at large, for instance. Or in The Bighead, for example, the double urinary catheterization between nun and priest and the religious invectives wouldn't be well received editorially 'cos it might cause the book to get dropped from a distributor. Of course I could be wrong!

Edward Lee

PS--I think my personal favorite gross-out in my own work, however, is the Shake-a-puddin' scene in THE HOUSE, which is a sequel novella to THE PIG.

I actually dont remember that part in The House. Atleast this gives me reason to go back and read it again.

I realize this is an older post, but i can't help but to reply. Leisure is making a bad move not publishing ALL of your works Mr. Lee. Does this company not see their sales in the mass market for your works? I have to preorder your Leisure titles through Barnes & Noble, they order about 10 copies per store in my area and i'm lucky to get the copy i get. Every title they stock of yours sells out. if a company like Barnes & Noble has no problem putting your works on their shelves, then i don't understand why Leisure has a problem pressing them. I guess they're allergic to making money. A company like Leisure should be aware enough to see what kind of sales your small press books bring, and capitalize on that in the mass markets. It's pathetic, and it's a shame that the general populace isn't being exposed to some of the greatest literary works of our time.

I often wondered this myself. I mean, some of the sex scenes in Gast, while not my cup of tea, I didn't think they were that extreme. Whereas in Brides of The Impaler, there is a part where a woman performs fellatio on an impaled male body. That to me, is Hardcore (but I wasn't offended by it.). Yet, Leisure let that go through. So, I'm kinda confused on what exactly would be deemed the "grey area".

Looking forward to The Golem. I'm getting it Sunday.

Who wrote Survivor sounds like my cup of tea??

Post subject:  Re: Too Hardcore for Leisure Books?

It was written by JF Gonzalez. It was a novel that was extended from a shorter novella called Maternal Instinct.

This is off the top of my head so feel free to correct me if I am wrong... :?

On the topic of Survivor....it's a mean book. But damn is it good. It was my first JF Gonzalez book that I read and I instantly became a fan of his. And yeah it's really suprising Leisure released it uncut. Also I'm still suprised they released Wrath James White's Succulent Prey uncut. That's a nasty little book too.

Whats wrong with a little gore? Survivor and Succulent Prey are very good. But I will always be a Lee girl.

It must be just male gay sex. IIRC, there's some woman on woman lovin' going on in Brides.
