I read the previous thread on this topic, but was still left with some questions as to what the deal is, or was, with Altar 13. From what I gather, Shane left Delirium and started up Altar 13 (which apparently didn't last long) and some people feel like they were burned by some broken promises. Well, Ill tell ya, I sure don't feel that way right now, but then again...I'm buying aftermarket. I just received a copy of J F Gonzalez's The Beloved in the mail, Altar 13 edition and maaaaaan... its sweet as all hell. Aside from the content, which is epic, it really is a nice looking book!!! Now, Ive looked around, but I am still unable to dig up a complete list of Altar 13's releases...does anyone know what other books they came out with? How many? Ive only found three...Snow, The Beloved and DEPRAVED!!! (If anyone has a copy of DEPRAVED, Altar 13 hardcover edition, and wants to sell it... let me know below and i'll shoot you my e-mail). Anyways, the books seem sweet, but I can understand that a few broken promises would cause collectors to loose some faith, and stop buying, or not buy in the first place. I'm curious though. Can anyone shed some light? |

Kingdom of Shadows by Greg F. Gifune. Depraved by Bryan Smith. The Beloved by J. F. Gonzalez. Snow by Ronald Damien Malfi. The Killing Kind by Bryan Smith. Carnival of Fear by JG Faherty. The Devil Next Door by Tim Curran. Altar 13 coincided with Delirium Books as DB did not 'shut down' until after Altar 13 was canned. Altar 13 ended in March, 2012 and DB in December, 2012. Many DB lifetime subscribers felt that these books should/could have been published under the DB's Dark Essential's line and then the lifers would have received copies as part of their sub. This turned out to be a portent as Shane canned DB in December 2012 for DarkFuse and cut all the lifers out because the name had changed and, he felt, the direction of the imprint too. |

I totally see why people with lifetime subscriptions would get upset, as the books were published outside the boundaries of these subscriptions. Sounds like an act of greed which ultimately backfired. I would be interested to know what Delirium books were published under the Dark Essentials line, and how much reimbursement people ultimately recieved (in books) on their life-time subscription payments. Ultimately, I guess my stance remains the same on the Altar 13 titles as these seem to be the only official releases of these books in hardcover format, and hence the authors only released hardcover versions of their stories. To boycott them at this point would only hurt the authors. I just hope future small press releasing companies take the lesson and follow through on their word. I was looking at the list posed by Larry Roberts of various small press horror book companies who have similarly closed their doors. It was noted by him that others have made the same mistake of trying to screw their fans. The fact remains... I'd really like to get my hands on copies of DEPRAVED and THE DEVIL NEXT DOOR Thanks Kresby for your reply ![]() |

I believe that all of the original DB lifers received at least their money back in books at retail. However I know of at least 1 sub that resold through Shane not too long before DB went kaput. That person got ripped. All the Altar 13 books are long sold out so impossible to boycott now. Also, all of the Altar 13 books had been previously published in paperback format which is the same as the Dark Essentials books were. Dark Essential Series: Volume 1: Dragonfly by Brian Knight Hexes by Tom Piccirilli Volume 2: Soma by Charlee Jacob Grave Markings by Michael Arnzen Ravenous Ghosts by Kealan Patrick Burke The Many by David B. Silva The Deceased by Tom Piccirilli AAAIIIEEE!!! by Jeffrey Thomas Volume 3: Hush by Tim Lebbon and Gavin Williams Deathgrip by Brian Hodge A Lower Deep by Tom Piccirilli Prodigal by Melanie Tem The Wishnik by Kurt Newton (free bonus) Volume 4: Excavation by Steve Rasnic Tem Untcigahunk: Stories and Myths of the Little Brothers by Rick Hautala Prototype by Brian Hodge The Demonologist by Michael Laimo |

Shane Ryan Staley is a douchbag. I don't think any reasonable person would disagree with that statement. I am sure a couple people who owe their living to him and are too incompetent to make similar money elsewhere would disagree, but only while in his employ. I have been fucked over a couple times in my life. I would prefer the guy who shoved a gun at me. At least he didn't hide behind legalisms and self-serving lies. I got interested in Staley and Delirium Books because he published plenty of Tom Piccirilli and Charlee Jacob, among other ultra cool authors. He changed focus after the insane popularity of THE RISING by Keene. Stale(y) kept on trying to find other middle brow authors who could deliver to a wider audience than the writers Sean truly respected. Stale(y) also published lots of books that didn't even meet his lowered standards in an attempt to become a larger press. About the time that every other book was a total dud I lost interest and started selling my vast over-supply of doubles and triples of expensive books to other fools. Every book that came through the door got resold immediately because it wasn't worth reading. Fuck Staley. When he reneged on his agreement to give me a lifetime supply of books I argued a bit, but in reality I couldn't care less. That rat sucker wasn't publishing much I cared to read, anyway. Even The Brian Hodge he puts out now seems low brow and uninspired. |

Thanks again Kresby...I have that copy of SOMA... Its really good quality as well. And yes Jim, I too am a HUGE Charlee Jacob fan. Who does he still put books out through... is it Delirium? I got a small hardback of It Drinks Blood, which seemed low budget compared to other releases of similar sized books, by, say, Thunderstorm for example. Is that what he's doing presently? Who the fuck is this guy? Man I wish I was around in this prior to 2011 so I could know the whole story. How is Staley connected to Larry Roberts? |

Larry Roberts has occasionally had a business relationship with Stale. Infernal House was a joint project that lasted four publications. Larry has been accused of setting up Morning Star Publications in order to avoid sending books to lifetime subscribers of Bloodletting Press. BP has been on haitus for some time. He has sold MS to Stale. Edward Lee's last couple novels had the MS imprint! So conceivably HEADER 3 could be published by Stale with the Morning Star logo! I will fucking cry. My favorite author being published by a douchbag who ripped me off. I could fucking cry. |

I doubt it. At least, I fucking hope not. Larry Roberts made mention that the next four Edward Lee books would be done through Bloodletting Press. I hope nothing has changed on this as I would LOVE to see another old school HIGH PROFILE presentation of Header 3, similar to the releases of Tom Piccirillis Thrust, Steve Gerlach's Lake Mountain/Rage and Douglas Cleggs Neverland. How fucking cool would it be to see a massive presentation of this book, on that level, Bloodletting Press style!!! Like, have the book inside a redneck bar, like Crazy Sally's or something else significant to the story which you open to find a bunch of rednecks head-humpin a half-dead New York City Boy and his FRIENDS!!! Or better yet... ...A Half-Dead, knobby-kneed Awky corn drankin White Trash Splittail!!! Yessir!!! I'd buy the hell atta that. |

It seems to me that Bloodletting Press is unfortunately dead. |

Hmmmm... If this is true, at least get Glenn Chadbourne doing the art again. There is just such a feeling that goes with a book loaded with his art. For me, Header 2 and Gast stand out as two of the greatest Edward Lee releases largely due to Chadbournes art. He gives it a grittiness I've seen from few other artists. |

Edward Lee announced a couple years ago that he had a four book deal with Larry and Bloodletting Press. I don't think he has finished any novel to publish since this was made public. So we shall see what we shall see! |

Indeed, I was made aware of Bloodletting's dissolution recently; therefore, my next book, Header 3 (see more info on another thread) will more than likely be released in hc by Camelot and the trade pb and kindle by Necro. These days publishers seem to come and go like the proverbial birds on a wire. Hope everyone is doing well! Bet Edward Lee |

It would be great to see another one of your books come out through Camelot. Gast and Header 2 are two of my favourite hardcovers... Chadbourne!! Chadbourne!! |

I have to agree with Decayedface, in terms of presentation of your work Camelot books are awesome, Chadbourne has created some of the best illustrations to compliment your work, GAST, Header 2 and Family Tradition are all awesome. |
