Mr. Lee, I just finished reading Trolley No. 1852 and The Innswich Horror. I loved both them of them. What did you have to do to prepeare to write in that style. I mean especially in Trolley No. 1852, you nailed making it feel like it was written by the man himself. Did you have to practice, or did you write in your own kind of style and convert it. I'm very curious because it was so well done! Can't wait to read more of the Lovecraftian stuff! |

Thanks for your interest! Indeed, it's pretty hard copying HPL's masterful style, and much more of it has to do with recognzing his use of certain sentence structure more than the potent vocabulary. The works I studied most closely were The Festival, He,and Rats in the Walls. But of course no one can effectively imitate the Master's style, they can only try and fail, and even in my failure, I'm quite happy with the attempt. In Innswich, I wasn't so much trying to imitate HPL as produce a generic facsimile of a late-1800's kind of style. Dunwich Romance, which should be out in pb before too long, is a lot of fun, I think, though it's more of a "caricature" of the Master's style than an imitation of it. I'm not writing in his style, although the book I am currently writing takes place in his universe. It's a nice little serial killer story set in modern times about an ex FBI agent hunting a Lovecraftian cult with a supernatural (spoiler: yes, it involves the Ancient Ones) twist. |

V.E.D: if you liked the others, I suspect you'll like Dunwich, even if the style is heavily deployed. Plus it's got sex scenes that are so off the wall I can't believe I even wrote 'em! I should know more about the Dunwich trade pb reprint soon. Mille: that's a great idea! You could even have the ex FBI agent be related to the investigator from Horror at Red Hook (Thomas Malone, I think) Best Edward Lee |

Hmmm... Now you have me thinking, I'm only about sixty pages in and could easily make that work. Thanks Ed, and keep on writing man, I turn everyone i meet onto your work, aside from my wife who will never forgive me for making her watch Header. Love your work, Ed, you've inspired me in so many ways. |

I did end up breaking down and getting Dunwich in hardcover. It was great. I really like that it expanded on the original story and kind of filled in what Wilbur was up to in between being denied a copy of the Necronomicon and when he goes to steal it. Really cool idea Mr. Lee! |

Mille: glad you like the idea--good luck with it. VED: my purpose n Dunwich Romance was, in part, to characerize Wilbur much more intently, and in that analysis all kinds of cool ideas presented themselves as to the detail of the last few days of his life.
