Brian Keene posted the following on Facebook:

"Sixty-Five Stirrup Iron Road is the tentative title for a collaborative novel written by myself, Edward Lee, Jack Ketchum, Bryan Smith, J.F. Gonzalez, Wrath James White, Nate Southard, Ryan Harding, and Shane McKenzie. All profits from the book will benefit Tom Piccirilli, who is recovering from brain surgery.

As of tonight (when Bryan emailed me his latest section) the novel is roughly halfway finished at 42,000 words. That’s good news, considering this was first proposed as a novella. So far, the line-up looks like this:

Prologue – Edward Lee
Chapter 1 – Edward Lee and J.F. Gonzalez
Chapter 2 – J.F. Gonzalez
Chapter 3 – J.F. Gonzalez and Brian Keene
Chapter 4 – Brian Keene
Chapter 5 – Brian Keene and Nate Southard
Chapter 6 – Nate Southard
Chapter 7 – Jack Ketchum
Chapter 8 – Jack Ketchum and Shane McKenzie
Chapter 9 – Shane McKenzie
Chapter 10 – Shane McKenzie and Wrath James White
Chapter 11 – Wrath James White
Chapter 12 – Wrath James White and Ryan Harding
Chapter 13 – Ryan Harding and Bryan Smith
Chapter 14 – Bryan Smith
Chapter 15 – Bryan Smith and Brian Keene

As you can see, it’s now each author’s turn again. The second half of the novel will feature different pairings (Keene and Ketchum, Lee and Smith, White and Southard, etc.)

We hope to have it finished by June. Deadite Press will be publishing the paperback and e-books. We may also do a signed, limited edition hardcover via Sinister Grin.

And yes, I admit I’m posting this just to tease the fuck out of you. But you’ve gotta admit, that’s one hell of a tease… :)"

The concept of all these top-knotch horror authors collaborating on one novel blows my mind, and I love the way they've structured the writing process, moving from one to the other by teaming up for the transitive chapters. Can't wait to read this thing!

I am curious, Mr. Lee, about how this works. When you collaborate with multiple authors on a novel like this, do you all start with a generally agreed-upon plot outline, or does each author (or author pairing) have a blank slate to take the story wherever they want, surprising the other authors in the process? If you'd prefer not to answer this and want to keep the magic of the writing process a mystery, I fully understand.

Any other info?

It's gonna be horror of some sort for sure, it's gonna be gross, but any other clues?

Ghosts, Zombies, Rednecks, Monsters, Psychos, Clowns?

I need more!!!! :D

I know nothing other than what I've copied and pasted from Keene's FB. Perhaps Lee will be kind enough to tantalize us with a few clues.

This looks to be bunches of fun. This is hardcore horror's finest crew .
And, as usual, I would be more than interested in a signed limited hardcover!
I just received my signed, limited to 50, tradepaperback copy of Tom Piccirilli's WHAT MAKES YOU DIE.
About 30 pages into it. All the usual Pic elements are in place. The ghosts of past regret. The insane asylum. The protaganist who can't seem to move or move on. Where will this story take me? Will it make me die?
This Stirrup project sounds cool. Can't wait to see what they-all stir up!

When I first read about this on Brians site, I almost came in my pants! The only author on this list that I'm not all that familiar with is Shane McKenzie. I just discovered Nate Southard thanks to Brian and he is an author to watch. As for the rest, they are the authors I buy and love the most. Hope this raises tons of money and morale for Pic!

Appreciate the interest, everyone! Lee got the ball rolling with the concept and the rest of us have just kind of built on from there, exploiting concepts which were obvious as well as others that someone may not have expected the next person to run with, so the arc has been surprising to us and hopefully will be to the readers as well. I don't know if others have had any back-and-forth with the next in line, but Bryan told me his plans after my section and I explained some of my hinted-at intentions if he wanted to incorporate or build on any of them.

All I will say is that there's an element of possession. And there's been something disgusting in practically every chapter, too.

This should be a good one, not to mention that it comes with the built-in fun goal of trying to get it signed by every contributor.

I thought it was a secret so I never mentioned it. I proposed the idea to Brian and Wrath last fall. I wrote the first 4000 words or so; hence I can promise that it, I can say with some credulity that it's some hard-knocking stuff!

This is going to be epic, I've got my fingers crossed something fierce that Sinister Grin does a nasty looking Hardcover of this, it would make my membership feel ultimately and utterly complete.

That's the best way to read! And I can't wait to see what else is going on in this project since I finished my section. Somehow I don't think there'll be any hobbits in it!

Folks: I'm pleased to let you all know that I've finally received the ms for 65 Stirrup. The 4000 words I wrote last Fall have now been added to to the tune of about 40,000 words, and by some of the best writers in the field. I'm halfway done reading and it's a ton of fun. When I'm done reading. it'll be my turn to make another contribution! Can't wait!

More later,

I recently picked up the latest Piccirilli writings. He just keeps writing more interesting books as he goes along! I sure hope he gets his health back

Last I heard, Tom's health had indeed improved and he was quite stable, praise God and Yog-Sothoth! The Stirrup Iron Road project is finished and, in my opinion, a total blast that the readership will dig very much. I feel particularly honored for being the original instigator for it, as well as for writing the first line and the last! Of course, I have no idea when it will be released but I do know that Brian has assigned some editors who are going over it now. Thanks for your interest and support!

Final edits have been made to this. It should be out any month now with Deadite. Not sure about the Sinister Grin edition since there will be signature sheets for that one, but we'll be getting through them as quickly as we can, I'm sure.

Sinister Grin Press is now taking preorders for the hardcover. It requires a prepayment of the full cost. I have not seen what the limitation of the signed limited is going to be. I have never purchased a book from this publisher before and I don't know what their policies are. It appears the books won't be available until December at the earliest. Deadite Press is holding off on publishing the trade paperback until after the hardcover comes out.

Sinister Grin is run by Shane McKenzie (author with Deadite Press, Thunderstorm Books, and many more). He has released books by Wrath James White, Jack Ketchum, Nate Southard, and others. I have several of them and can personally vouch for the company and product.

As far as the print-run, since this is a benefit the goal is to sell as many books as possible. The HB will be for sale for about a month and then sales will be cut-off. However many copies people order is how many will be printed. Shortly after that time, the pb and ebook will be released.

Does anybody know if Sinister Grin accepts PayPal? I can't find any info regarding payment methods on their site and I don't want to purchase the book only to find out I can't pay for it.
