James Herbert died today (20th March) aged 69.

He was the main reason I got into horror fiction to begin with.

It is always a loss when one of us passes away. It leaves a hole in our genre, minds, and hearts.

Very sad, too soon, but while he may not have a HUGE backlist for a guy who had been writing for nearly 40 years, he's always been one of my favorites (The Dark, The Fog, and Sepulchre are all horror classics), and hands down my favorite UK horror writer. Recently, I finished reading The Ghosts of Sleath and bought several of his novels I didn't yet have, including a used copy of his first novel, The Rats. For those out there who have not read Herbert yet, do so....you'll not regret it.

Of his later work, Nobody True is really good. But you may need to skim the first 100 pages as he goes into too much detail about his protagonists company.

Definitely a legend and will be missed.

Oh, yeah, The Dark is the Herbert book I'll always remember most vividly. Consummate gore and wonderful occultism (and the "shotgun" scene!) What a wonderful writer.
