Post subject:  BOOK/MOVIE PROGRESS

First, I'm tickled pink by Header's re-issue after all these years; not to mention an intro by my good friend Jack Ketchum (which was a big surprise. Can't wait to read it!) and a bunch of wonderful blurbs. Thanks to any and all who've bought it.

As for me, besides getting places on the bus much more slowly due to Christmas traffic, things are moving swiftly and joyously. More important notes for my Cornface movie have been compiled. I'm now in the meat of learning the digital editing programs and in spite of the fact that I'm a SLOW learner, I suppose I'm getting a bit of the hand of it. I'm starting with the free Windows Live Movie Maker and then hope to graduate to Sony Vegas (which does A LOT more stuff and is A LOT harder.) But all I need to know are the basics. I've also been shooting test footage with the two cameras and finding out the advantages of each. Yesterday I got a cheap wide angle lens in the mail that KICKS BUTT (Only cost 25 bucks) and I'm continuing to get volunteers to be in the movie, to the extent that I have to turn people down now. Other props I've purchased recently: a fantastic eyeball with trailing optic nerve, fleshtone latex that looks great (but DON'T get it on hair!), fake nipples (I kid you not), 2 sets of fake breasts, one fake vagina that looks shockingly real (and, no, I haven't abused it!...yet), 3 different brands of fake blood to see which is best (some of them stain your skin), supplies for Cornface's face, a great remote control for the Canon that only cost 7 bucks, amd, wow, I can't remember it all. When I get time, I'll take some pix of this stuff and have someone post it on their facebook or website so you can see it.

Progress continues to be made as well on the new novel (still not sure what the title will be) and even though I've only begun, it's already OVER THE TOP. I'd love to tell you plot details but that's a jinx. I'll only say that a porn crew picks the wrong house to shoot their movie in.

In all, everything is going great for me, and I sincerely wish the same for all of you. I'll be in touch soon!

Best,
Edward Lee
PS--for those you who were waiting for the movie V/H/S to be released, it's out now on Amazon. What a wonderful flick!
pps--Nazis at the Center of the Earth was a ton of pulp horror fun!

All this sounds very exciting. Can't wait for the new story. And the film sounds great.

I hope we don't have to wait too long for either.

Where does Header 3 fit into this? Will we see that in 2013 or will it be more like 2014?

All the best for Xmas

Thanks for all the enthusiasm; and, yes, reelsplatter, I am definitely interested in your input; additionally, I'm very grateful to the offer of advice from smokeyling which I will definitely be taking him up on. As for Header 3--and I hope this isn't a huge disappointment--but that will be postponed for a while. Right now--as far as writing goes--I'm all about my new novel/novella/whateveritwillbe, and my next writing project after that will be my as-yet untitled Polish novella, which I will begin this May or June (have I mentioned this before? Damn, my memory's a pile of crap!) I was so impressed with Wroclaw, Poland last August that I'm returning for 3 or 4 weeks in late spring to begin a very occult novel that will take place in Wroclaw. Without saying too much, it will be about an American historian who is paid by some religious entity connected to the Vatican to come to Wroclaw and check out a "troubled" house where an investigator disappeared. But then he finds out there's far more than the house to be concerned about. That probably sounds like "just another Edward Lee haunted house book" but I can promised it will be much more intricate than that. It will have stuff in it that makes me queasy and thrilled at the same time! And as for Cornface, my first experiments with his "face" were semi-successful and I'm confident a little bit of tweaking will provide what I envision. I also just ordered some--did I mention this?--some cool stuff from Dapper Cadaver and Amazon. I'm AMAZED at what's available from Amazon in the "sexually off the wall" department! Oh, and also, Peteboiler has agreed to play the mailman in Cornface, which will entail 2 scenes (thanks!) I've also found a woman who has expressed interest in play an errant "ghost" and will be naked save for fake nipples and a merkin (I've only just learned that a merkin is a pubic hair toupee! What an interesting world we live in!) Also, other interesting news, the film option for Goon was renewed today but of course, as I've mentioned in the past, options don't at all mean that a project will actually be filmed, it merely turns it from one chance in a thousand to one chance in a couple hundred. I'm knocking on wood regardless!

Best news of all, however, is I heard from Tom Pic's wife, Michelle, today and she reports that Tom's most recent MRI results were not only excellent but also far better than anticipated. A WONDERFUL pre-Christmas present!

Back to work! Talk to you all soon!

Congrats Ed! I think it's bad ass that you are branching out while still doing what you love. Like reelsplatter and others have said, I'm more than willing to help with anything you need. I've been editing video for about 15 years now. Started back in the tape/linear days but now do everything non-linear. If you ever see a good deal on a Mac, you should snag one. Final Cut Pro is just about as good as it gets for professional editing on a budget. Plus, I-Movie HD is super easy to use, free and in my opinion, a great way to do a "demo" version of your product. I haven't edited with Windows for awhile but Adobe Premiere is good. I also have an Canon HV-20 that I never use that I would be willing to let you borrow if you need it. Keep up the great work!

As always, thank you for keeping us posted on all of your exciting endeavors! I am so far behind on my reading (the P.O. is very busy these days...), that I have time to wait on your next work, whenever it may be! As for the movie, keep the board up to speed, and I know any or all of us will be willing to help with whatever you need. Even (gasp!), financing. Take care!

Great news about Pic. He is a damn good man. The best I have found are in the horror trade.

Post subject:  Re: BOOK/MOVIE PROGRESS

splatterhead: thanks much for your offer to help with editing advice. I got the Sony Vegas Movie Maker which does tons of things that I need but I'm afraid I'm too technically pea-brained to learn it. Bob: let me know when you might be coming out this way, cos we could easily shoot your two postman scenes in an hour or so. (I've also got Johnny at Wild Willys to be in it!) Konnie: wow, there's a story idea. A girl asks for Header for Christmas but Santa misinterprets that, and GIVES HER a header under the tree!

At any rate, I hope you all are faring well in the pre-Christmas shopping mayhem. I love the holidays, of course, and all their accompanying lights, music, Salvation Army bells, etc. My only problem is that it takes ten times longer to jay-walk due to the endless traffic processions. Got my shopping done, though!

On the work front, progress continues to be made on my “Black Boxes” novel/novella. It’s really going to be irreverent and irredeemable; my ensemble of porn-star main characters are an earthy crew indeed. It’s great to be back writing in earnest again; after so long a hiatus, for some reason, I feel the same enthusiasm about writing that I did in much younger days. I hope to soon have a worthy excerpt to post here.

Progress ensues as well on my Cornface movie. Several experienced folks in the know have offered their invaluable advice (for which I’m very grateful and will indeed take them up on); also, Reelsplatter has offered his skills as special makeup technician. You should see some of his work–it’s outstanding. (He’s making me two pairs of scrotumless testicles as we speak!) I’ve received more mindblowing props, the most salient of which come from Dapper Cadaver (what a GREAT website!) I got a quart of edible blood that looks alarmingly real, their “budget” severed head, a foam rubber shop hammer, a severed finger, and some other things that look great. On the other hand, Cornface’s face continues to be problematic. I tried applying various grotesqueries to several partial masks, including a few “half masks” (phantom of the opera-style) but none of th attempts worked well enough to please me. I’m just gonna half to man-up and put my face into a variety of gloppy liquid adhesives to see if things will stick to it. (Cornface has a SERIOUS dermatological problem; hence he wears a mask most of the time.) To briefly synopsize, Cornface is a nice guy but is mocked and ostracized because of his face; he is also growing more and more disheartened by all the scumbags, drug dealers, nasty women, etc. who live in his neighborhood. Even the neighborhood kids make fun of Cornface! Anyway, one night Cornface is solicited by a succubus who promises that if Cornface offers his soul to Satan, Satan will give him a Brad Pitt-type face. But part of the transaction will make it necessary for Cornface to sacrifice people to the devil. This gives Cornface an opportunity to get a new face and clean up the neighborhood at the same time. Trust me, this movie will be cool and offer visual elements that haven’t been seen before (IF I’m creative enough to pull these elements off!) I’m getting the hang of the cameras now, have mastered the remote control, and am now experimenting with lighting. And by now I have more than a few women who have volunteered to be Cornface’s victims–naked victims, I might add. I’ll keep you posted on progress.

I’ll be back on the board soon. Until then, thanks for your support, and take care and be well!

Lee, I've written one other slightly twisted Yuletide tale (years ago) but inspiration struck this morning and I banged out this little story over coffee. Obviously, I've thoroughly enjoyed your work since the mid to late 1990's, so here ya go. Enjoy!

Night of the North Pole Zombies

Chris Kosarich
Copyright 2012

On the night before Christmas…Santa had a big problem. Not sick reindeer, or a toy factory explosion, or even ol’ Saint Nick coming down with some wicked flu on that all-important day of all days.
No, he had a much more serious problem.
Zombies, incredulously enough, advancing in a staggering wave along the southernmost boundary of his vast North Pole property. One of his elves had reported it to him in a panic-stricken voice just moments ago.
At first, Santa thought this a joke, since elves are known to be pretty clever practical jokers. But elves also know not to play one on Santa on this all-important day of all days.
Santa needed to see this for himself, and went to a control room lined with large flat-screen monitors (hey, he loves technology like everyone else!). The elf who’d informed him about the threat pulled up a video-feed of the shambling horde of animated corpses.
“What are we going to do, sir?”
Santa was quiet for a moment, his white-gloved right hand tugging his beard in deep contemplation at this most potentially disastrous scenario. Sure, in the recent past, he had a few near-disasters during Christmas, like almost being shot down by a drone fighter, or one Christmas Eve when Rudolph became ill and he’d managed to get last-minute help from, of all creatures, a werewolf…
…but this conundrum was beyond his powers to solve.
Of course, never mind the whole “how” and “why” aspect of the problem, but there wasn’t time to bother with that.
“Sir,” the elf asked, urgently. “We need to do something!”
“Presents,” he replied.
“What do you mean? Give those, those things, gifts?” For a moment, the elf thought his boss had gone crazy.
“Sure, everyone likes to get presents on Christmas, silly!” And then Santa told him what to do.
It took everyone working double-time to pull it off, and by then the zombies broke through the security fence, making their way within a few hundred yards of Santa’s main compound. Thankfully, zombies have a hard time shuffling through snow.
The veritable mountain of gaily-wrapped boxes stopped them, literally, dead in their tracks. Boxes of every size and shape, wrapped with shiny, twinkly, colorful paper, each with a red, green, or gold bow. At first, the zombies didn’t know what to make of it, almost scratching their decaying heads in confusion.
Then, at once, they tore into the many boxes with gusto and glee, as only the living dead can. Moans of delight echoed in the night. Shreds of wrapping paper and ribbon filled the air like confetti.
Meanwhile, in the control room, Santa and his top elves watched the scene on a monitor, the mood tense, no one moving.
Suddenly, unbelievably, the zombies voraciously ate the contents of the boxes, making loud munching sounds and groans of satisfaction. Shortly after their repast, they began to mill about, more sluggishly than usual, some even slumping to the snowy ground.
“Look, sir, its working!” one elf proclaimed.
In minutes, the zombies had all fallen in ragged heaps, unmoving, and more dead than usual.
“You did it, sir!” another elf cheered.
Santa clapped his hands, and said, “Well now, we all did it, not just me, but you know who we have to thank, don’t you?”
Yet another elf, who hadn’t been witness to the final details of the anti-zombie plan, asked, “Who do you mean?”
“Missus Claus,” he replied, with a merry but mischievous twinkle in his eye. “It was her Christmas fruit cake that did it. She messed up the recipe last year, adding twice the amount of our aged Old Saint Nick’s Wickedly Good Whiskey…and well, we didn’t have the heart to waste all of it, so we saved the stuff. Honestly, though, I didn’t know we’d need it for something like this.” He let out a long, hearty guffaw of laughter.
Before he left the control room, he gave instructions to his senior elves about how to clean up the mess outside. The fruitcake consumed by the zombies had enough liquor in it to make an excellent accelerant.
And that was how Mrs. Claus’s Famous Holiday Fruitcake saved Christmas.

The End

It's great to hear such enthusiasm over both writing and movie-making. It certainly sounds like things are going well.
Now, if I could just get rid of this image that's been stuck in my head, of a certain author sitting in a directors chair, whipping reticent actors with an inflatable tentacle, maybe I could get some sleep.

Chris: very cool Christmas story--thanks! ronin: believe me, I won't be whipping actors, I'll be kissing their butts and paying them a bunch of money in order to coax them to do some fairly outrageous things! I'm probably going to shoot a short scene today, which stars my landlord who is also Cornface's landlord.

Everybody: have a wonderful Christmas!

Ed, I wouldn't worry about production cost. Have you ever seen Splatterfarm or Video Violence? Those two are pretty bad. Redneck Zombies, released by Troma had a similar budget to those two films but was actually pretty good. At least you don't have to shoot on vhs. lol.

I did indeed see Video Violence and, as lousy as it was, was impressed by many elements. And I KNOW I can do better! So far, the new year has been great (except for the Redskins getting their asses kicked.) Got still more props in the mail, including several blood pumps, some decent cheap wigs, and another grimly realistic rubber penis whose only purpose in its existence will be to get snipped in half with tin shears. Last night I shot test footage for a low light scene with blue light and it worked pretty well. Man, this is so much fun!

Everybody please take care and be well!

Wanted to mention that yesterday I saw Texas Chainsaw 3d. (There was only one other person in the theater besides me! Not a good sign!) In spite of some curious time-line flaws, a dead giveaway plot point in the FIRST FIVE MINUTES, some lapses in credulity, and a nothing-new-here concept, I'm happy to say the movie was very entertaining, and I highly recommend it. First, the 3D effects were engaging yet not distracting, and even though the characterization was kind of contrived, it all worked fine, and showcased some very good acting. Production and directing were outstanding. And they should create a new Oscar category for Best Tease Award for the film's protagonist! Also, the chainsaw coming right at your face from the 3D technology was hoot. And last night, on Netflix, I watched a micro budget flick called Death of the Ghost Hunter which, though the first five minutes had me ready to brand it a turd, turned out to be very well done and full of new plot devices (which I didn't expect in a Found Footage film). And there was one "ghost peeping out of a doorway" scene that creeped me out so effctively I kept waking up unnerved and and half-expecting to see the same apparition peeping into my room.

As for progress on my own movie, I've tested varieties of make shift gore and monster-slop, some worked, some didn't. Tested my "vomit-pump" and it appears to work great. I'd also read somewhere that mixing one part Hersheys Chocolate Sauce with 2 parts strawberry sauce made great deoxygenated blood. I poured it all over myself in the shower and discovered the hard way that it doesn't work for shit! But on a high note, I discovered a brand of "puffy" latex paint that makes for outstanding veins!

I wish you all a great week!

If you put latex on your skin, make sure you put vaseline or a similar substance on you before the latex. If you don't, you will end up cussing and wincing nonstop in the shower as you give yourself a unwanted wax job. lol.

Splatter: man, you ain't kidding about the latex! I was nearly in tears pulling that crap off. And it stinks of ammonia; so I bought some ammonia-free latex and that smells worse, like bum b.o.! I don't think Edward Lee Studios will be relying much on latex. I also found out the hard way that food coloring, especially red and black are close to being indelible skin dye! Crap on that! On the more productive front, I had some VERY successful face-paint tests; if the files weren't so huge I'd find a way to put them up. Also did a test shot of me getting squirted with my strawberry/chocolate sauce blood concoction that worked great. Oh, and my blood-launcher works great too (it's an interesting alternate use for a golf putting-hole siphon! ) Lastly, I found this cool expanding foam stuff in a spray can that makes tremendous intestines. And, right this very minute, in my refrigerator, is a jello breast mold. No lie. I'll report back soon; plus I should have an excerpt from my new novel ready to post soon. Later, all!
