Family is family, and it's the most important. I almost lost my dad a few years ago while unemployed; he went in for a routine stress test and less than 4 minutes into the treadmill they screamed at him to get off, he was going to die. It turns out his "widow-maker" artery was 90% blocked; hence it's lovely name. I was actually lucky to be unemployed at that point, since it let mom go back to work, me babysit my father for 2 months, and I got to spend time with him I'd never have gotten to otherwise. We've never been close, but that time was a damn fine thing to have.
What I'm saying is you're doing right by your mother, even though you sure as hell don't need my approval.
Take care of her, whatever happens, and be glad for the time you have left with her. Both of my parents are getting up there, and I've recently come to realize I need to do the same thing. Good luck on everything, and let us know when you guys are settled.
