I read YOUR work all the time, and I enjoy it...but I wonder, who do YOU read? Other than the old masters of the genre, who are your favorite horror writers of today? I read you, Brian Keene, Anne Rice, Richard Laymon, Jack Ketchum and Kim Paffenroth....others as well, but I am very interested to hear who YOU would recommend.

Just finished "Black Train", it was insanely good! Anxiously awaiting "Witch House".

Thanks,
Brandon Lee Spitler.

My biggest problem, between deadlines and taking care of my mother, is the outrageous lack of TIME I have to read other folks' books so when it comes to modern horror I tend to only read stuff by friends: Ketchum, Keene, Pic, Wrath. Plus the books I've read by Jordan Krall I've loved, Brian Smith, Gord Rollo, etc. (My all time fave modern horror writer is Ramsey Campbell but, damn, I haven't had time to read his newer stuff.) But I wish I could read more. Another problem, on rare occasions when I do have extra time, I find I don't like to read an influx of modern novels because I don't want another author's stylistic voice to penetrate too deeply into my head. It's kind of a curse. Whenever I travel, which is often, I tend to reread HPL, MR James, and some other old writer because I won't feel inhibited or threatened by their style. Great question, though!

Campbell's collection Scared Stiff is a masterpiece; his novels Hungry Moon, Parasite, and Incarnate are wonderful. His MEga collection is called Alone with the Horrors. Check em out!
