I've read what a few others are saying about publishing newer, lesser known authors for the upcoming NEP books and I have to disagree. Kealan's TURTLE BOY is the exception and he deserved the award, but frankly, I won't shell out $35 dollars for an author I've barely heard of. Yes, they might be extremely talented, but there is a market for newcomers to build a reputation, and these books are not it. Magazines, chap books, and paperbacks from small press publishers are just a few outlets that allow authors to get their name out to fans and begin building a reputation. When I enjoy the writings of an author's short stories in magazines, I start looking for chap books from that author and then graduate to paperback novels. Not to quote Brian Keene, but everyone needs to pay their dues and if you expect someone to pay $35 or $40 for a book, you better have a track record to justify that price. Remember, you're not just paying for the story, you're paying for the limited edition and the autograph in that edition. If it were up to me to choose the next few NEP books, I'd pick Tom Piccirilli, Rick Hautala, Jack Ketchum, Edward Lee, Tim Lebbon, T.M. Wright, Elisabeth Massie, Michael Laimo, and -- I know it's a long shot -- but let's all shock the horror community... Bentley Little!!! |

See this is why I post questions like that here on the board. Some great answers. A lot of different views on the series. Thanks everyone. Keep 'em coming folks. And just a little FYI on Bentley Little. Mr. Little has no desire to see any of his novels or books in a signed/limited form. He believes that books should be read and he has no interest in folks wanting to collect his books and not read them. I know I know, but don't think we haven't tried. I've been trying since Day 1 NEP to get him on board. It just doesn't look like it will ever happen. Hell, I'm such a big fan I don't care if another small press publisher got him. I just want all his books in a nice signed/limited edition. Just thought I'd share. |

Post subject: | Kealan Patrick Burke |
It's a rare thing to see a new author hit the scene with such power and raw talent as Kealan Patrick Burke! You just have to read his stuff to realise how good this guy is! There is not too many authors out there who can deliver what Kealan does with his quiet, haunting words which resonate days - hell weeks! - after you have put one of his books back on your library shelf. The words, sense of wonder, dred for characters that truly haunt the mind, and the very essence of his mastery of the craft will not elude a mass market audience once he's widely exposed. I have been reading horror for decades now, and I can assure those who may have some doubts about Kealan's ability - how the few 'they' do eludes me! ( for want of a better way of putting it ) - that he is what I term a true talent in the horror world today...and the future! ![]() Mark my words - this guy, in my humble opinion, is great! |

I echo Brian Knight, as he does great work. I like him a lot. JF Gonzalez, too. Steve Shrewsbury rocks. If he writes a horror novel, sign him! |
