After having to pass on two books I really wanted - Cherry Hill and Smile No More - because of the $60 price tags, this is pretty exciting.

James A. Moore has a new novel out, Subject Seven, and you can find it for ten bucks at pretty much any bookstore. It's a YA novel, but I don't care. Any new Moore is a good thing, in my opinion. Especially if he can reach a whole new audience who enjoy great fiction.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde meet the Incredible Hulk in this high-violence series opener featuring human genetic experiments gone wrong. Five years after his escape from an underground lab, the now-teenage Subject Seven gathers four others like himself who were supposed to have been killed but were adopted out instead. The others are unaware of their special abilities to change back and forth from ordinary teens into superstrong, superfast warriors with new personalities and few memories of their alter egos. Most of this does not become clear until well into the story, after each character wakes up covered in blood or showing other signs of having been on a rampage, struggles to figure out what’s going on, and is contacted by Seven just in time to take on squads of heavily armed troops dispatched by the mad scientist who heads the original secret project. Readers patient enough to weather each team member’s protracted introduction will be rewarded by plenty of blood-and-thunder action and the enticing prospect of more to come.

I know!!

I picked it up today (I had a coupon) and it only cost me $8.27 for a nice trade paperback. I did feel weird walking through the Teen section looking for a book, though.

Don't knock the YA. There is an awful lot of good genre fiction out there hiding under the YA label - and a lot of genre writers such as Moore, F. Paul Wilson, Joe Lansdale and the like are venturing into YA.

The next time you're in the YA section have a look for The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey. You'll find all the horror you're looking for right there - as an old-school monster-hunter goes up against a horde of Anthropophagi - headless monsters that feed mouthfuls of sharp hungry teeth in their belly. Bone chilling, baby.

I'll give you that.

Those bobble-headed pimple-pocked, gum-snapping, glaze-eyed, red-drool, pointy-toothed, pre-teen Twilight fans are a little unnerving...

The nearest Borders didn't have the new James Moore. I'm gonna have to try B&N.

Dude, a few years ago I read Prowlers by Christopher Golden, but I didn't read any of the subsequent books or any of his other YA stuff. I do remember it didn't read like what you'd expect a YA to read like.
