I realize this isn't about the written word, but I felt the need to rant. AFI's Ten Top Ten is on tonight, and of the ten genres shown, horror is not among them, while such pitiful selections like 'Romantic Comedies' and even 'Sports' are. I can't even begin to express my disgust at this. Horror has once again gone unrecognized in the film industry, despite serving moviegoers faithfully for years upon years. To name a few films of the genre often considered among the elite: Halloween, Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, The Shining, The Universal Studios monster pictures, Carrie, Misery, Dawn of the Dead, Nosferatu, Psycho, What Ever Happened To Baby Jane, The Omen, Jaws, Scream, The Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense, the list goes on. Rant over. |

Horror will always go unappreciated as long as there is the stigma of it being wrong attached to it. Folks who don't even read horror have labelled it and tried to say it corrupts, is the work of the devil, blah blah blah. It's really a shame as some classic works from Shelley, Stoker, Poe, etc did grace the mainstream and are now considered must read books. As a fan of heavy metal music, I see the same thing. The music community does not recognize metal, even though there are some brilliant musicians and songwriters working today. |
