Ha! I have very little inventory of horror novels, I pass them all along to others after I'm done reading them. Laurel has been getting them now for about year and I've been giving them to my son also. The older I get the more my memory fails...thats when I wish I didn't give them all away. But if I kept them all, I'd need another den to hold em. Tt |

Reading can be an escape, but why should that mean people who read fear reality? By your friend's logic, any hobbies or extra curricular activities he enjoys could point to a fear of facing reality. People who enjoy camping may see it as a temporary escape from their stresses, but that doesn't mean they don't deal with their problems. I wonder about life, the human condition, history, where we're going, and why we fear. My interest in literature is a form of exploring these things. And I read just for the enjoyment, something even some readers have a problem with. You experience joy by embracing life and as all the noir stories remind us, you can't enjoy life if you're running from it. |

It's funny. I've had the same conversation before. But about sci-fi and fantasy. I shut the guy up when I pointed out that a lot of things were inspired by sci-fi. Cell phones, GPS, computers, robots, satellites, manned moon missions, and so one. One of my english teachers used to say "Fiction is truth disguised as lies. Non-fiction are lies disguised as truth." |

'Like lepers with the clap' I have to write that one down, DGM. I wasn't aware that lepers could get the clap since they're already lepers, but I learn something new on Horror World every day. And I still say you need a little more cowbell. |

I surf the net for the news. If I find something interesting, I get several different takes on it. But since I'm working really long hours, I don't get online much, nor do I watch that much tv. |

I think the quote I have listed below from that dude up in Maine says it all. Stephen King: not only horror's grand master but also its philosopher. ![]() |

Post subject: | Everyone has their escapes |
I think - regardless of whether it's Guitar Hero, Halo, Television, or Golf, that everyone has their chosen method of escape. I suppose it's possible to dive into reading so far that you barely come up for air and don't tend to the real world, but that sure doesn't seem to be your case -- so your friend is way off base. I think - personally - that it's good that horror in general seems to be heading more in the direction of the supernatural and veering away from stories that are just like those gritty, mind-flaying headlines and news bites.. You don't need to be obsessed with reality to know it's to be taken in small doses. DNW |
