Hello all. I'm new here so thought I'd write an introduction and a bit about the stuff I'm reading, maybe see what other folks think of the books I like and get some advice on my next ones to read. I'm John from England, currently residing in Geoje, South Korea. I started getting back into reading when on business trips a few years back. Picking up a book for the plane ride then finding that it was great fun to sit reading in the pub or restaurant during the evenings alone. Since coming to Korea, I've spent lots of time sitting in local restaurants supping beer, eating steak and reading horror. I've just started November Mourns by Tom Piccirilli. Only read Choir of Ill Children by him so far, which I liked but thought the pace was slowed too much by the atmospheric writing style and it was difficult to find a clear plot. November Mourns has started out better. Also read in the past few months: Tim Lebbon - Nature of Balance, Berserk and Desolation. NoB and Berserk I thought were good ideas that weren't quite taken advantage of enough. Desolation I thought was brilliant. Couldn't put it down. Gary Braunbeck - In Silent Graves. Amazing book. Loved it. Brian Keene - Rising, City of the Dead, Ghoul, Dead Sea, Conquerer Worms and Dark Hollow. I liked them all except the Rising and City of the Dead. Keene seems very popular but although I like his stuff, I find his characters lack depth. Well paced stuff though. A load of zombie books by various authors. David Wellingtons Monster trilogy was good and I especially loved The Words of Their Roaring by Matthew Smith and Dying to Live by Kim Paffenroth. I've got a bit of a soft spot for James Herbert. He's not a great writer but he manages to keep me hooked. Next on my list after November Mourns are The Midnight Road and Headstone City by Piccirlli and Mr Hands by Gary Braunbeck. I'm needing some recommendations after that. I tend to like my horror to be a bit fantastical rather than real. I don't thnk I really have an interest in any other genre except maybe fantasy. Anyway, that's me. John Edit. I'm also possibly the only person in the world that hated The Stand and gave up less than half way through it. |

Hey John! If you like things just this side of the fantastic then Clive Barker's always a good choice. I just read Like Death by Tim Waggoner and it was very fantastical. |
