This is the first year for the awards. The works just have to be dark to be considered. Shirley Jackson didn't often write straight out horror either. Tokyo Year Zero is the only one I've never heard of. It's apparently about a policeman in war-time Japan trying to find a serial killer. From what I could tell it looks like war-time Japan is more the focus of the story than the the actual hunt. Sharp Teeth is supposed to be a sort of stream of conscience style monolouge about someone who turns into a dog rather than a werewolf. It didn't look interesting at all. I always thought Baltimore was a graphic novel. After seeing it on the ballot I looked it up and it's just heavily illustrated is all. It looked like it could be good except I'm too vamped out right now to bother with it. I read an interview with Elizabeth Hand and she said generation Loss started out as a horror novel, but turned into something else. So I was a little surprised to see it nominated for the Bram Stoker. And now it's popped up here. I should be getting it from the library soon and I'll let you know how it goes. |
