Who is it, but one of the people that had interviewed me this week for the new job. The conversation went something like this: "Hello" "Hi Paulo! How are you? This is Kathleen. I was one of the people that had the pleasure of interviewing you." "Hi Kathleen. It is nice to hear from you. I hope that you are doing well and have contacted me to share some good news.” "Well, Paulo, I do have some good news but it will not probably be the good news that you are expecting to hear" "Uh..." "Let me explain. We unfortunately decided to go with another candidate…” “And what exactly is the good news?” “… It came down to you and this other individual out of 37 candidates. We thought carefully about who to take and wanted to take someone who was willing to make a full commitment to this role” “I am sorry. What do you mean by “full commitment”? I am willing to fully commit myself to that position. There was no other intent on my part. Isn’t that the implication when someone applies for a position?” “Well, we need someone who will stick around for at least 5yrs and with your qualifications, we frankly don’t think that it will happen with you” “You mean, I am under-qualified for the job? But that is what I am doing right now. On the test after the interview on Excel, how did I do? Did I fail?” “No, no. You got 100%.” “Huh?” “You got 100%” “So, what is the problem exactly? The other person just had a better interview?” “We think you are over-qualified and would be extremely bored with this position” “But…” “I am sorry, Paulo. We really believe that you have a bright future ahead of you and we detected on how ambitious your goals are. So, this is the good news. You are too good for this job. We decided to go with a candidate that is better adjusted for this position” “You mean less qualified” “Yes, better adjusted” “If there is nothing else I can do to change your mind, I would like to thank you for your time…” “It was pleasure to meet, Paulo. Remember, your future is bright” “Thanks, I guess. Bye.” “Bye” I HATE INTERVIEWS! Can you really be over qualified for a job, or did I just get an ear full of crap? ![]() |

No, it is true. It just happened. I am fuming. I had to write it down just to calm down and not scream here at work. I thought I had the job too because it went great. I guess it went TOO great. Darn it. No worries though. I will keep looking. Maybe I will get something that is more my standard... ![]() |

That was not a very professional way to handle this. What they should have done was to sit down with you and explained thier misgivings and give you an oppertunity to address them. What gets me is that they actually think they were complimenting you! I'm not trying to make you madder than you are, but man, they really screwed up two ways. The first was by not hiring you if you were the more qualified, and second was the way they made the decision. Hang in there Paulo. Maybe some good can come of this. Tony |

That is exactly what it feels like Tony: Like I got the big shaft. I am dousing my sorrows in scotch tonight when the kids go to bed. Thanks for listening to my ranting. The good news is that I saw a posting from Nanci on the Stoker Award being broadcasted live on the net. Have you seen that yet? HHF - I'm sorry to hear this. They did treat you shabbily - and if you think about it, would you really want to work for someone that shallow? I know it's hard (hell, I'm going to be in the same position soon), but keep plugging! A hex on those people ![]() |

Wow, man. That's total bullshit. But you know what? You don't need them. They definitely did you a favour. I doubt you would have enjoyed working for a bunch of flakes. I say you dodged a bullet there. Sounds to me like you're destined for bigger and better things anyway. |

Thanks for all your kind words, guys (and lady). I took a little time off work with a buddy here, and we went out for a Guiness and a burger across the street at an Irish Pub. They serve a pretty mean burger. Here is the place: http://www.mcmullans.ca/ |

Wow. That level of insincerity from the company was ridiculous. All they had to do was send you a letter stating they were going with another candidate. period. I've never heard such BS where they tell you they have good news but are NOT hiring you. Trust me, you don't want to work there. I've had my share of bad jobs and this one sounds like a disaster. Don't worry, something will come up. |

Nice place Paulo! Pool tables too! We have places like that here but they are always so crowed with young people. I found a nice place that has vitural golf machines instead of pool tables and that was neat. You could have a nice meal, a few beers, and then play some golf. They were actual golf courses too, and you swing real clubs. Tt |

Must be nice... We have three crusty bars here. I haven't set foot in one in about 5 years. The other two I've never been in at all. And don't plan to go anytime soon. Like I said... ![]() |

Yeah...but we don't have virtual golf machines. That is a neat idea Tony. I have seen virtual batting cages in some places, but I did not know that they had golf. |

There are a couple places in Edmonton with the virtual gold setup. It's pretty cool to be able to golf at any level when it's 30 below outside. While eating chicken wings. And drinking copious amounts of beer. Good times... |

It does sound like fun. Suicide wings, sloshed on beer and trying to swing a golf club. I think I would end up chipping a tooth.... ![]() But really, one of these days, we will all get together at a similar event and we will be referencing this very conversation. |

Sorry to hear what they did to you Paulo. It was really low. Keep your chin up. Something much better is right around the corner. To go to a nice pub like that I'd have to drive to Vegas... or visit one of you guys! ![]() |
