Well, I haven't been published, so my advice may mean nothing, but I think it can take that long sometimes. It doesn't have to be perfect the first time through, so you can always move on and come back to parts the are giving you problems. I wrote one that still needs to have edits done on it, and it took me five years to write the first draft. The thing is, it took me four and a half years to write the first 150 pages, but only six months to write the final 170. I didn't have a deadline so I just tried to have fun with it. If I had to do it again, I know that it would go much faster, now that the first attempt was out of the way. I learned a great deal just by writing the first one. If you are struggling with writing the first chapter, try outlining the whole story (if you haven't already). For me a good outline made things start moving much faster and more fluid. Hope it helps, sorry if it doesn't. ![]() |

Way to go, you're definitely on the right track. Keep writing, get that first draft done, don't worry how long it takes, let the story come to you. When that's done you can worry about polishing. And don't worry about the length, some people write small chapters while others write chapters that take about 1/4 of the book's length. Keep up the good work, you're doing great! ![]() Cesar |

write everyday. Even if it's only 200 words. It will come. Sometimes, you'll need some time away from it. DOn't get obsessed with it. And honestly, don't get obssessed with word counts. 1000 shitty words will not help in the long run. I'm a published poet, with only one non-genre short story in an anthology. However, I've been doing a lot of long fiction projects recently. Recently, I've had 2000 word days and days of -250 (in needed cuts). My best advice, from one aspiring novelist to another, is if you hit a snag, don't get mad. Take a few days off. Think. Go for a walk without your iPod/mp3 player. And then, when you least expect it, while you're eating dinner or driving to work or something like that, divine inspiration comes, and always at the most awkward moment. This is what I've been going through, writing wise, lately. |
