I can happily say I've only seen one the whole way through, and maybe five to ten minutes each of four others.

12.

And this list is missing the sickest, most disturbing movie of all: Salò (The 120 Days of Sodom).

Salo. I think I know which one this is, but I'm going to look it up. Thanks Brent.

Salo is disgusting but at least it's not real. Some of these movies have real animals being tortured and killed. That is the real sick shit.

Post subject:  Re: The Most Disturbing Movies Ever?

I know Cannibal Holocaust has footage of actual brutality to animals, which is why I will never watch it. I can enjoy the most fucked-up, extreme horror imaginable, as long as it's 100% fiction. I won't support any kind of "art" which I know has relied on creating real life horror to produce.

Which other films on this list have employed similar tactics? I just want to make sure that I never give those works the satisfaction of having me watch. But I would like to check out the ones that didn't do that.

On another note, I see Maniac on this list. I've never seen the original, but I did check out the remake starring Elijah Wood on Netflix last night. I was blown away. What was really cool about it is the whole thing was presented from first-person POV, but not "found footage" style (no camera). I've been waiting for a movie to do that, and it worked really well. The best horror film I've seen in at least a year.

From what I understand, Faces of Death also shows real-life deaths. I will probably never watch it either, although I don't think it's necessarily evil like Cannibal Holocaust. An important distinction (in my mind), if I understand the movies correctly: Faces of Death simply presents already-existing footage of actual deaths (and didn't actually kill anything new for the purpose of filming it), whereas Cannibal Holocaust did just that, killing animals to get the footage they wanted.

Men Behind the Sun has a scene where a cat is thrown into a pit of starving rats.

I was also thinking of Faces of Death.

That page led me to another page where they talked about a bunch of "documentaries" that depict people and animals being killed.

Have you seen A Serbian Film? I can stomach a lot of gore and violence but I won't watch a movie that has a scene where a baby is raped.

Post subject:  Re: The Most Disturbing Movies Ever?

I have seen A Serbian Film, many times actually. I own the uncut version and it's probably in my top 25 horror films of all time. The baby rape scene is definitely hard to stomach. I usually feel nauseous and put my hand over my eyes and peak between my fingers during that part. Although the subject matter couldn't get any more disturbing than that, at least there's nothing evil about the scene (in my mind) because A) they obviously didn't use a real baby (it's animatronic) and B) that scene is presented as a despicable, atrocious act, and is certainly not glorifying it in any way.

The reason I love A Serbian Film is not because it's incredibly extreme, but because it's a supremely well-made movie. Top notch acting (especially from the lead), directing, cinematography, editing, and one hell of a score. The fact that a movie about this subject matter has the production value of a decently budgeted Hollywood movie still shocks me, but it's true.

But to each their own. We all draw our own lines about what we will and will not tolerate watching, and I definitely respect that.

Funny story though. I've shown A Serbian Film to someone on a few different occasions. I always explained the movie to them beforehand, so they knew full well what they were about to watch. But at least two of those times, the person's roommate came home and walked into the room at the exact moment the baby rape scene started, with no idea what we were watching, and they flipped out. I felt sorry for the poor bastards. Shitty timing on their part, but I was wholeheartedly amused at the same time.

THE EXORCIST will forever be my favorite movie on this list. I consider it one of the 5 best films ever made.

I can't keep up with you lot. My idea of disturbing is Showgirls. (I'm a DANCER!")

I watched Happiness (1998) for the second time last night. It's a drama/black comedy, but it's definitely up there in disturbance factor for me. Great movie.

Just saw Begotten, so make that 13 for me. What a strange, fascinating movie. Definitely worth a look for anyone who's into artsy-fartsy experimentation with no discernible plot. I found the full movie on Youtube.

"Salò (The 120 Days of Sodom)" should DEFINITELY be on that list!! Another noticeable omission from that list is "El Topo" -- a crazed fever-dream, surreal spaghetti western and, when it was originally released, a source of much controversy and condemnation.
