You have a TBR pile of about 200 books you REALLY want to read. A co-worker you are very amiable with gives you a book to read and is very enthuiastic about it. A book you really don't want to read. You: A) Suck it up and read the book. B) Fake read it and hope he doesn't quiz you C) Politely decline |

I've had this happen to me numerous times, recently. It's weird how a lot of my friends and relatives read completely different things, and it didn't used to be that way. Back in the old Stephen King Salem's Lot days, I found plenty of folk with similar tastes to my own. Not any more. As an effort to save face on both sides, I usually accept it and skim/read enough so I can say I've tried and failed. A polite "You know, I tried but I couldn't get into it." conversation is always better than an all-out, stubborn refusal. |

I'd say Janet has the more sensible answer. But I'd probably say no thanks anyway. |

Janet probably has the right idea. Borrow it, read/skim a few chapters one night, let it sit for a week, then return it and say you tried. |

Follow up question: What do you do if you follow Janet's advice but the person keeps foisting it on you? |
