Heartbroken to hear this news. Richard Matheson was a gentleman and fine writer who inspired many of today's authors. He wrote for Twilight Zone and his novel "I Am Legend" was voted Vampire Novel of the Century by the Horror Writer's Association. I had the pleasure of being his "wrangler" at the 2009 Stoker Awards in Burbank, Ca. He made it a point to make sure that I received signed copies of some of his books. He was friendly, open and completely accessible. Below is the statement from his daughter. My condolences to his family and friends. "Ali Matheson is the daughter of Richard Matheson. She says this: "My beloved father passed away yesterday at home surrounded by the people and things he loved...he was funny, brilliant, loving, generous, kind, creative, and the most wonderful father ever...I miss you and love you forever Pop and I know you are now happy and healthy in a beautiful place full of love and joy you always knew was there..." |

This man was one of the all-time greats. Though they were stylistically (and philosophically) very, very different, I'd rate him up there with Bradbury. HELL HOUSE was sheer genius and became the template from which many modern haunted house horror novels have since been created. STIR OF ECHOES was truly excellent, as well. And, of course, there was DUEL, which became the legendary movie by a very young Spielberg. The man was a powerhouse. Sad day, indeed. |

My first published story, "Preparations" was inspired by his "For the Nearly Departed." I love his work. |
