Gone. Already. I knew his cancer was terminal but the end has come horribly fast. ![]() |

Man, this is just so sad. Why do so many great writers die young? Banks was truly brilliant. Even though he was best known for his SF work, I'll never forget the first time I read The Wasp Factory, and how it totally blew me away. One of the most inventive and original horror novels of all time. |

A dreadful shame. Judging from all the comments since, he was obvious very special to lots of writers and readers. Most writers couldn't write science fiction as good as his, or 'mainstream' novels as good as his, never mind both. |

Against A Dark Background was the first book I read. A very distinctive voice. Not all out masculine, or all out feminine, it combined both and really struck a chord. Very Clive Barker-ish in that respect. I've read a ton of his stuff since. I struggled a little with Feersum Enjinn (sp?) but once I got into it, I was fine. Amazing writer. |
