| Post subject: | Into the trunk it goes |
I've spent months now fighting with a world building fantasy novel, a project I began with an eye on the current market. This was to be a change of pace/style for me after many years of writing grounded in the present day. I did 40,000 words, every one of them having to be dragged into being kicking and screaming. This morning I decided enough is enough. I've deleted it from my laptop along with several notebooks full of world-building notes. My main problem with it all was I couldn't suspend my disbelief... and if that was the case for me, there was no way a reader was going to manage it either. So, into the trunk with it! Strangely, I don't feel that I have wasted the time... I feel that I have learned something else about what I want from my writing. And I can already sense other stories that had been locked out starting to force their way into view. Begone foul beast! I'm throwing open the window and waiting with a mixture of delight and trepidation to see what makes its way in next. |
