It's 6 years now since I left the day job. Can't say that I miss it much. I'd never have made it this far if it wasn't for the ebook revolution bolstering the print and short story sales. I'll always be grateful for that. When I went full time I had 5 novels and over 150 short stories in print, mostly in genre presses. In 2007 I started selling stories to pro-rate markets, and that's when I decided that I wanted to see if I could hack it full time. It was tough going those first couple of years, but when the kindle came along and my books started selling there the finances improved and since about 2010 I've been going strong. I've got 18 novels in print and ebook, several story collections and numerous standalone shorts. I also now have over 300 short stories sold to magazines or anthologies, many to pro-rate markets. That, plus a number of print editions in luxury hardcovers at specialty presses means I've been able to keep my head above water. I've got a lot of things in the pipeline for the rest of the year and 2014 so let's hope things keep rolling along... |
