For me it's John Connolly's BAD MEN, while I wait for THE BLACK ANGEL (the fifth book in the Charlie Parker series) to be delivered, and the release of the sixth book THE UNQUIET later this year. BAD MEN is not a part of the series, but it's got the trademark Connolly style and wit. Very much enjoing it so far...

What are you folks reading?

Why yes, me!

But seriously, if the hardcore stuff is your thing, check out any of Ed Lee's titles, or books by J.F. Gonzalez, Chuck Palinhiuk or Charlee Jacob.

The bookstore, and the message board there is a great way to uncover a whole host of new authors, from the hardcore, to the quiet subtle creepy stuff...

I've just finished "The Reflecting Eye: A Charlie Parker Novella" from John Connolly's collection NOCTURNES. It was, unsurprisingly, exceptional.

The Trench by Steve Alten

I finished his first Meg book a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Trench turning out to be equally enjoyable.

The Horror Club by Mark Morris. It has a blurb on its cover from Ramsey Campbell saying its good, so that helped sell it for me.

I haven't read any Steve Alten, though critics seem pretty evenly divided over his work. He's certainly popular though!

The Horror Club is an excellent novel, though Mark's Fiddleback and The Immaculate are my favorites.

Just finished reading Cormac McCarthy's The Road (excellent), and I'm halfway through Michael Connelly's A Darkness More Than Night.

That's true. Steve has a very straight forward non-frilly style that I find refreshing. Almost like he's saying 'this is how I see it, this is how I'm writing it.' So I can see critics or readers who prefer a more pretty prose or poetic prose style steering away from him.

I like his stories though :)

I'll definitely have to check him out.

Right now I'm reading LISEY'S STORY by Stephen King.

I'll check that one out. Nautical stories are some of my favorites. Thanks Jimbo!

I'm reading The Michigan Murders (true crime) by Edward Keyes. Good stuff so far.

I just started Haunted Harbours by Steve Vernon. So far his style has made the book very different than most other ghost story collections out there.

Right now, I'm in the middle of Battleground, by W.E.B. Griffin. It's a novel about the Battle of Guadalcanal in WWII. Somebody told me I gotta read it, so I gotta read it.

Now reading - Watchers by Dean R. Koontz (again...for third time actually. I just get a hankering to read it every few years and this year it happened again!)

Watchers was great. The movie they made based on it, however, wasn't.

Eh, yeah...it was a horrible movie. The characters were botched to the...the...I'm not even going to say it...for fear of sullying your boards with profanity I won't comment on how they mangled the plot.

I've often wondered how writers feel when their work is torn apart like that on the screen. I'd be stuck between shrugging it off the instant the contract was signed and never seeing the thing...or using the director and producers as stress dollies.

I'm reading some of the old classic short stories. I read Smoke Ghost by Fritz Leiber and The Yellow Sign by Robert W. Chambers. They are in an anthology titled The Horror Hall of Fame. I think I'll either go after The White People by Arthur Machen or The Willows by Algernon Blackwood next. I'm just biding my time until I recieve my copy of Ramsey campbells new book, The Grin of the Dark, in the mail. :D

Summer of Night by Dan Simmons. I'm multi-tasking lately so it'll take me longer to read than normal but so far so good!

I loved Summer of Night! I plan to read The Terror sometime this year if I can as well. He's such a good writer, I'm sure that it has to be good! :D

My favorite Simmons is Carrion Comfort, but it was a close decision. So far, The Terror is excellent.

Author:  KealanPatrick [ Thu May 03, 2007 10:03 am ]
Post subject:

Yeah, CARRION COMFORT was great too. That man can write.

I've just finished McMurtry's COMANCHE MOON. On to THE HARROWING by Alexandra Sokoloff now, then to the ever-growing pile of manuscripts I've been asked to read for review/blurbs/introductions.

Ramsey Campbell's The Grin of the Dark. The man is a genius! It reads a little faster than some of his other work but is no less involving. I'm enjoying it tremendously. Some are claiming that it is his greatest work. That would be a difficult thing to do, to top books like Incarnate, Ancient Images or Midnight Sun but so far it isn't disappointing me at all. It's got weird evil clowns, bodiless shadows, and all sorts of creepy, vague threats lurking about and I'm only sixty pages into it! :D

I'm actually in the process of catching up on Campbell's recent work. Picked up The Darkest part of the Woods and The Overnight yesterday. I then hope to get to Secret Story and The Grin of the Dark, which I've heard is amazing.

Love Campbell's work.
