Just preordered this one also! I wonder why Tim isn't coming on here and giving us a heads up about it? The great thing about Tim is that you don't have to wait 6 months between books with him, more like 3 - 4 months, and aint that grand!

Yeah, I should have given you heads up, but I'm under the gun editing right now. Sorry, though. I'll try to do better.

Just finished revisions on Hive 2. I had to cut it down to under 150,000 words so Barnes and Nobles will carry it on their shelves. I'm told it was a matter of shipping weight. No big deal, it was fun revising it but a lot of work. It orginally stood at 250,000 words so I had to cut a lot out of it...so while I was at it, I did a lot of re-writes and quite of bit of re-imagining of the book as a whole. This is not the first revision to the 2nd Hive book. Let me tell you the story...

In 2005, HIVE was published. Great. In my mind, it was a one-shot book. End of story. William Jones suggested doing a sequel. Okay. Then he suggested...why not a series? Hmm. Sounds cool. I got pretty revved up with the idea and in 2007 I actually started writing it. Well, I worked on it over a year (off and on) and churned out this massive novel called SWARM. It came in at like 450,000 words, roughly 1500 double-spaced pages. Who knows what I thought I was doing. Did I think I was Stephen King? Did I think I was writing IT or THE STAND? I don't know. I just couldn't stop once I started rolling. Imagine the look on William Jones' face when he opened that file! Well, this was the small press and massive books are also massively expensive to ship. Can you cut it in half? Maybe two novels at around 225,000 words? Okay, I did it. Lot of re-writing, but I got it done. Then last month he told me B & N would like it under 150,000 words. Okay. Who am I to argue? It's not William's fault, it's simply business (William actually told me he'd publish whatever size book I gave him, but he's a good guy and I wasn't about to put him on the spot). So...now the second HIVE book--HIVE 2: The SPAWNING stands at about 142,000 words.
But I'm glad I did it.
The book is improved, I think. So HIVE 2 will not be the last, you see. There's a lot of stuff and a lot of story left to tell and the lion's share of it is already written. What had originally been concieved as a trilogy is now a...sextology? I guess that's the word. Six books.

Anyway, that's my story! Long-winded and very much true!

Yeah, that is a good thing! That's the only thing that bugs me about Thomas Ligotti--you'd need to be rich to buy some of his ultra-ultra-ultra limited edition stuff! I mean, damn, have you priced out a copy of THE AGONIZING RESURRECTION OF VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN AND OTHER GOTHIC TALES lately? Talking about f**king ouch!!! Somehow, someway, someday I must have that book, though...even if I have to go back to robbing graves...
