This book is not really supposed to be out for another two weeks, but it looks like Amazon is shipping already. (I think it would be a nice gesture if the author got a copy, don't you?)

I swear, I am absolutely the king of the great reviews that actually keep people from reading my work. Every time another critique appears that praises one of my books for 'subtlety' and 'sophistication,' I wince. It's like those words are Kryptonite to the average horror reader. The only thing worse is any synonym for 'challenging.' God forbid anyone should say something was 'intelligent' or, even worse, use the L-word ('literary.') Today's review for THE STREETS is classic. It's a terrific analysis, but you can actually hear a little chorus of "huh?" “The thematic concerns of both of the previous tomes are echoed here and agreeably expanded upon, though the subtext here is arguably less opaque. Following an epigram by the American dramatist Edward Albee, the author then chooses to lead off his narrative proper with a quote by the noted Belgian essayist Marguerite Yourcenar, whose Humanist ideals and perspective appears to have had an enormous influence on all three of Dunbar’s Jersey Devil- centered tales.” Yup, that should about do it. Back to beauty school for me. |
