This was my first Piccirilli novel and I'm heading over to the bookstore to get more. This guy can write. Does anyone want to give me some recommendations on where to start? |

Mels, you should go next to The Cold Spot, then The Coldest Mile. If you enjoy those, there is a whole wide world of Pic novels, novella's, and short stories you can find. His small press stuff is fantastic, but is very brutal and more expensive than his paperback books. Tt |

Hi TT. I picked up those two and found A Choir of Ill Children at my used bookstore. I just started reading The Cold Spot. What did you think of A Choir of Ill Children? |

I really enjoyed it Mel. My favorite Pic book is November Mourns, a close relative of Choir, so when you finish Choir and if you want to read more swamp horror from Tom, you can pick up November Mourns also. Pic is my favorite author. If you are interested I can give you my grade on each of the following books by him: Dark Father: C (Horror and his first published book) Inside the Works: A+ (extremely hard core, and has stories by others including Ed Lee) The Dog Syndrome: C (stories) Hexes: B (Leisure Horror) The Deceased: C (Leisure Horror) The Night Class: C (Leisure Horror) The Dead Past: C (early crime fiction - part of a series) Sorrorws Crown: C (early crime fiction - part of a series) Pentacle: C (short story collection) Welcome To Hell: B (non fiction, advice for writers) A Lower Deep: D (Didn't care for this one at all, though others really liked it Leisure Horror) Grave Men: A (Western) Fuckin' Lie Down Already: A (brutal, also included in his new one Futile Efforts) A Choir of Ill Children: A (Horror) Coffin Blues: A (Western) Thrust: A (not sure what to call this, intense) Waiting For My Turn To Go Under The Knife: A (Poems) November Mourns: A+ (horror) Headstone City: B (horror Little Black Book of Noir Stories: B (reprinted stories) The Dead Letters: A (crime fiction - noir) All You Despise: A+ (noir - a perfect story with a wild ending) Frayed: A (not sure again what to call this, intense) The Midnight Road: A (crime fiction) The Fever Kill: A+ (perfect noir, crime fiction, my second favorite Pic) The Cold Spot: A The Coldest Mile: A The Nobody: A (brutal noir) The Shadow Season: A I don't think I forgot any of them. I also have his comic book and a copy of Mean Sheep, both of which I am afraid to open. These are only my opinons, and they change sometimes depending on my mood (ha!). Tt |

I liked The Cold Spot but I'm not sure what I think about Choir of Ill Children. I have to think on that one for a while. I'm reading The Coldest Mile now and enjoying it. I'm still looking for November Mourns. |

Well, Choir can be a tough read for some people. It's pretty heavy and dark. I think you'd enjoy November Mourns much more. You can find used copies on Amazon for almost nothing, but you do have to pay for shipping. The Coldest Mile is great, though it does end on a bit of a cliff hanger.... Tt |

The Coldest Mile was great. Will Tom be wrapping up the cliffhanger in his next novel? |

I'm afraid not Mel. So far Bantam has not commisioned him to finish off the series, I guess they were not to impressed with it. So Tom worte Shadow Season for them instead and he has another one coming from them later in the year. He does talk about finsishing it often though, and I really believe he would not go to his senior years before he becomes senile and drooling without wrapping this thing up. I bet he's got it done already, sealed up and just waiting for a publisher to offer him a contract for it! Actually, thats not Tom's way, but I wish it were true. I miss Chase...alot. Tt |

Hopefully I'll get back to it one of these days, in some fashion and from some publisher. Unlike most publishers out there, Bantam seems less interested in crime series. A lot of pubs use the books to help springboard each other, but Bantam plays things closer to the vest, and are worried that there will be less readers for later series titles because readers will fear getting lost in the book if they haven't read the earlier novels. I don't think it's true, but you can't really fight the bean-counters. But The Coldest Mile did go into a second printing, so maybe that will change their minds a bit. In any case, even if I have to go to a small press, I'll probably do a last book before I wind up senile and drooling. ![]() Thanks for the generous words, Mels and Tony. |

Just read about no plans for a follow-up to Coldest Mile! That would be awful. C'mon Bantam get yer heads out of yer asses! ps. I think i'll send Bantam a little note demanding a resolution to this series. ![]() |
