Right now, I'm reading Showcase Presents: The House of Mystery Volume 1. Bronze Age DC Horror Comic goodness. Pleasepleaseplease let there be a Volume 2, and Volume collections of The House of Secrets and The Witching Hour as well.

I'm also strolling through a collection of Mark Twain short stories and will be cracking open The Ruins by Scott Smith and You Have The Right To Remain Puzzled (a murder mystery, I love me some murder mystery) by Parnell (CHUD) Hall sometime this week.

I've got stacks to go through and don't know where to start. Any suggestions or cautions from the stacks?

Also, I was thinking of what to do with the books once I've finished them and I'd much rather pass them on to others. Maybe we could forward them to the administrators and they could do an Old Man Mike's Old Books Giveaway (or something along those lines). On month it might be four books and another month it could be only two depending on what I can get through.

I really liked THE ATTRACTION --different for Clegg. A real drive-in movie horror story.

Deathbringer is kind-of, how do I say this?, delishously bad. It's the standard who is dying next? story dynamic, and Bryan Smyth writes some howlingly bad metaphors. I hated it at the time, because I thought they wrecked the mood, but in retrospect, that just may be a decidedly campy approach, mixed with some over-the-top violence.

Joe McKinney's book struck me as rather souless. The main character is not well drawn enough -- Brain Keene, this guy isn't. Average zombie fare, which means there wasn't enough to distinguish it against other other zombie books out there.

JF Gonzalez -- I had definate problems with the guy's prose style, but the story itself is sound. Psychologically taut, not the extremely violent fare that Survivor is known for.

Clegg -- my first and only exposure to him. "The Attraction" while a meat grinder B-movie plot structure, is crisply written and movies quickly. Lots of character distinctions, which is good, but cause there's a huge cast there. "The Necromancer" struck me as an interesting bit of occult historical fiction.

Edward Lee's Slither is a decent monster novel, if one that's just a bit too damn long for its own good.

What is it with all these overly wordy books anyways?

Ristow, thanks for the heads up. I wouldn't read it in that case. It's good to know not to waste my time with it. I know that horror has a wide range of things that it encompasses but I am extreamly picky about the type I like. It takes me forever to read a novel, so I only read ones that I can really get involved with. Novel's about serial killers or plagues and things like that which are more real world just don't interest me. I like novels about haunted houses or anceint evil entities that hide in small quite towns. I still like for them to have good characters but the supernatural and spooky mystery stuff has to play a very heavy roll for me to be willing to invest my time in it.
