The Rogues Gallery
Welcome to the new anthology series from Firbolg Publishing. The Rogues Gallery, a collection of flash fiction, will be released yearly in January. The anthologies will consist of flash fiction stories submitted throughout the year to our monthly web site contest. Each anthology will have a specific theme inspired by images from the 1800s.
In keeping with the ties that bind and bound Firbolg Publishing to the past, each month we will post a woodcutting or drawing from the Nineteenth Century. The image is the prompt for your imagination--create a piece of flash fiction based on the picture, and submit it to Firbolg for consideration for our monthly “best of” postings and the opportunity to be included in the year-end anthology.
The guidelines:
500-1000 words (this is strict)
Keep the gore/ violence to a minimum. We are most interested in gothic dark fiction rather than splatter style horror. Atmosphere and suspense always trump excessive bloodshed.

Step into the Firbolg time machine! Your story can be set in the 1800s, but it doesn’t have to be. Dream states, hallucinations, fantasies, eerie time shifts, actual events…as long as the story is inspired by the image, it’s your time period(s), your place, your imaginative space.
Our editorial staff will pick a “best of” selection from the monthly submissions, and those stories will be published on the web site. The “best of the best” of each month’s stories will be reserved for publication in the year-end anthology. This is a unique publishing opportunity for both emerging and established authors, so stretch your imagination across the centuries and take us into dangerously uncharted new territory--gothic dark fiction awaits you…
