Holy Shit! This one arrived at my doorstep last night, 5 pounds and almost 700 pages of apocolyptic fiction! I started it last evening and I must say that this is as entertaining as Dead Sea was. The beginning is so freaking good! If you read Tim's "Toxic Shadows", you should consider that a warm up for what lies in Ressurrection. I really enjoyed Toxic Shadows, but this one, so far, is blowing that one away. For a taste... ...in the town highlighted in the story, there is a freak show emporium that houses all kinds of oddities of nature, body parts of the grotesque, and human freaks that were preserved in glass jars. When the floods hits the town the emporium is wiped out and all the glass jars break. These preserved things, or parts of things, are swept away along with the contaminated water. But soon, they join others that were just as dead as they were, and all of them are quite hungry. You can try to stop these things, you can chop and dice these newly risen until they are little more than pieces or a gooey mush, but it's to no avail...they will find you. This is great stuff! This is in the post as I type. Tim Curran has leapt into my top 3 favourite writers after reading Skin Medicine and Dead Sea, which was fantastic. Got Biohazzard and Hive in the same post I think. I can't always keep track of what I order from Amazon. |

I'm nearly finished this and I have really enjoyed it. For a while there after around 300 pages I got to thinking there was a bit of repetition and that I loved the characters and dialogue as usual, but that the horror was a bit comic bookish and silly. Needless to say, I put such silly thoughts aside and enjoyed the horror for the fun that it was. Great dialogue, as usual, Tim. I especially enjoyed the bit where the cops are discussing farts I actually used the "would've walked out of my asshole" line myself today. Except I am British and say "arse". If there were ever a movie, Hubb would need to be played by Clu Gulager. Anyway, that Grimshanks is one silly mothercocking humpsucker. What shitting larks. Looking forward to my next Tim Curran books but worried that I will soon run out. |

Glad you enjoyed it, John. I second the Clu Gulager idea. As far as the comic book horror, yes, definitely. Zombies are the ultimate comic book horror in my opinion. Some of the best zombie stuff I've ever read (and seen) was in the old EC horror comics. Nobody could draw a walking corpse better than Graham Ingels...so when I do zombies, I do them over the top and LOUD the way Ingels drew them. With a macabre sense of humor, too. I like my zombies that way. For me, zombies should be less Romero's walking deadheads and more Ingels, more Fulci's Gates of Hell, more The Evil Dead. |
