Jeremiah was a …. Vampire?

Sorry, couldn’t help it but neither could Petrucha in this interesting tale of the undead.  Fans of crossover YA horror might remember him from the excellent Wicked Dead series co-written with Thomas Pendleton (aka Lee Thomas) yet he returns here with a standalone novel that is steeped in history.

Many writers have found that if the vampire mythos is going to be mined, a new vein must be found (apologies for any bad puns here).  Petrucha begins with the oldest “American” history as the Fell family jumped straight off the Mayflower into the Massachusetts Bay colony.  Prey for a creature feared by the Native Americans with a few jabs at the Puritans, the family dies, save for Jeremiah, who lives to seek salvation and possibly a change back to humanity.

Legend holds that a stone can do just that but his travels take him across the globe, from the New World to France to Egypt to biblical lands over a course of 150 years.
Thankfully, the writer tempers his writing with a great deal of levity to offset the interesting but vast amount of historical and biblical background.

A fun read for those tired of the same old vampire story.
