In terms of bang for your buck, I don’t think you will find a better bargain anywhere than this e book purchase of Ancient Awakenings. If you are like this reviewer, you can’t help but be caught up immediately in its action packed plotting and its wry humor. To put it simply, it is one hell of a fun read that you won’t be able to put down.
The novel starts off introducing readers to Joseph Miller, Demon Hunter. It seems Joseph is almost as old as time itself and that he has had only one job over these many millenniums…killing nasty demons. The thing is demons really can’t be killed; they can be conquered in battle and then banished for awhile. But unfortunately the same happens to Joseph Miller, once he’s finished his job and there are no more demons to kill, he too disappears. But the demons always come back, and when they do Miller wakes up from whatever sleep he’s been forced into and does battle with them all over again. Sometimes these battles take place hundreds of years apart, so when Miller is once again woken up, he has to assimilate himself to the current culture. And currently, Miller finds himself happily assimilating himself to a new invention called television and a whole range of new weapons he’s never even dreamed of to battle the demons.
Next we meet Ann who is having all sorts of man trouble; her boyfriend is a doctor who seems to be toying with her affections. So after not hearing from lover boy for a few days she decides to go to the hospital where he works and confront him. She looks all over the hospital for him but no one seems to know where he is. But Ann does meet a patient who’s lying in a hospital bed who warns her that her boyfriend’s coworkers are hiding something from her. To be more specific, he tells her that most of them are demons and she better get the hell out of there. Ann, being a stubborn and skeptical woman, refuses to believe him. She should have listened. What follows is a blood soaked battle through out the hospital involving guns, axes, claws, and very sharp teeth between werewolves, demons, and Miller, Ann, and a policeman they pick up along the way.
Now you might be thinking that this plot line sounds a bit familiar and you wouldn’t be wrong. The recently released Dracula’s has a similar plotline involving beasties slaughtering people in a hospital, but that’s really the only similarity they share other than both being excellent reads. I can say if you did enjoy Dracula’s (and who hasn’t?) you are going to love Ancient Awakenings.
The characterization in this novel is fantastic; you can’t help but fall in love with Ann and want to be best buds with the policeman who assists her. You’ll even want to share a beer with Miller, though you really don’t want to get too close to him for safety’s sake. The plotting as mentioned is action packed, it never bogs down or sets your mind to wandering… it’s really is that exciting!
So if you got ninety nine cents in your pocket and you’re looking for a good time you’re in luck, I can’t think of a better way to spend that buck than on Ancient Awakenings.
