Roger Ma’s first book was the entertaining, lighthearted, and surprisingly informative ZOMBIE COMBAT MANUAL. It was a How To guide about fighting the ravenous hoards of the hungry dead in up close and exceptionally deadly hand to hand combat. Or at least melee combat, as a number of nifty handheld weapons were also covered in the book. It was a fun and breezy read that highlighted the history of zombies to separate ‘fact’ from fiction, it talked about the anatomy of the undead so that you could attack their weaknesses, covered tactics for both single and group combat, and discussed what weapons were most effective and how to best use them. It was a funny book in a tongue in cheek way as it took itself way to seriously in just the perfect amount to let you know that it knew exactly what it was doing.
Now Roger Ma has penned his follow up book, THE VAMPIRE COMBAT MANUAL. So take the paragraph above, wherever you see the word zombie, change it to vampire and you’re basically got this one down pat. Yeah this is a one note joke trying to double dip. It’s not bad per se, but it reads very samey to the other book. It’s still kind of funny in a nod and wink sort of way, but just changing the flesh eaters to bloodsuckers isn’t enough to warrant picking up this book if you already have the previous one. However if you don’t have the zombie book already, or like vampires a whole lot more than the shuffling, munching dead, then go ahead and give this book a shot. It is an amusing diversion and who knows, if you’re ever in Transylvania it might just save your life.
