Hit the Books to Write a Hit

Damn, you mean I can't just make it all up?

That's what I sometimes say when I'm writing. You mean fiction isn't one hundred percent fictional? You mean it has to be plausible as well—which means I gotta research? Memories of high school afternoons spent slaving through card catalogs (yes, I'm old enough to pre-date the internet) and writing footnotes come to mind.
