"The Feast of Catchville" came about because I needed to write a shorter book.
I'd written "Swaybuck" and "Delving: Obligations" - but no one would touch them because they were 150k and 175k repectively. Over and over again the feedback I received from publishers was,
"Great stuff, but it's too long." One publisher even wanted to split up "Delving" into two separate books, however, since I wanted it to be the first of a Dark Fantasy trilogy, I didn't really want to split it up.
Any-hoo, to write a shorter tale, I thought I'd make sure that the timeline of the book took no more than one evening. The thought was that if I made the timeline shorter, it would take less pages to map out.
I kep the plot fairly simple as a result. Two college professors, husband and wife, journey up to Northern Wisconsin for a weekend vacation at the "rustic" Bennington Hotel. At the same time, something is "feasting" it's way east across the Northern Plains. Needless to say, everything culminates into an evening of terror and bloodshed in the tiny town of Catchville.
The book was picked up almost immediately by Stone Garden Publishing and released in March of 2006. It broke the single month sales record for the company and is currently their second all time best seller.
Have you read it? If so, I'd love to hear what you think - good or bad.
