"The Feast of Catchville" came about because I needed to write a shorter book.

I'd written "Swaybuck" and "Delving: Obligations" - but no one would touch them because they were 150k and 175k repectively. Over and over again the feedback I received from publishers was, "Great stuff, but it's too long." One publisher even wanted to split up "Delving" into two separate books, however, since I wanted it to be the first of a Dark Fantasy trilogy, I didn't really want to split it up.

Any-hoo, to write a shorter tale, I thought I'd make sure that the timeline of the book took no more than one evening. The thought was that if I made the timeline shorter, it would take less pages to map out.

I kep the plot fairly simple as a result. Two college professors, husband and wife, journey up to Northern Wisconsin for a weekend vacation at the "rustic" Bennington Hotel. At the same time, something is "feasting" it's way east across the Northern Plains. Needless to say, everything culminates into an evening of terror and bloodshed in the tiny town of Catchville.

The book was picked up almost immediately by Stone Garden Publishing and released in March of 2006. It broke the single month sales record for the company and is currently their second all time best seller.

Have you read it? If so, I'd love to hear what you think - good or bad.

If you dug "The Feast of Catchville"...

You know that it was the first appearance of the mysterious Helman Graff in book form. Helman's first appearance ever was in a few shorts that were published in a now-defunct ezine, and later in the limited release chapbook, "Graff: Tales from the Hunt". I'm pleased to announce that you'll be seeing more of Helman early next year, in a Delving themed anthology that will focus primarily on Graff...

Details to follow. :)

We're still waiting!

Feast was a great novella. Your use of the environment as a character was wonderful and potent. I still get shivers thinking about it!

I would love to see "more Graff".

O.K., you really didn't use it (the environment) as a character, but it just may as well have been one.

Hey! That's great Ttzuma! Glad to hear you dug it.

More Graff is definitely in your future - look for an "Official" announcement later this summer, and the book will be released in January, '09.
