Oh, I'm enjoying them. I love his work, and his writing always amazes me. I set myself a goal of reading all of his works that I had. Problem is, after I started, I kept finding more and more and soon I had double the number of books I started with. Damn the OCD for not letting me stop before I was finished.

Reading a boatload of stories for the Mark Twain Writers Workshop.

Funniest moment so far was when discussing one particular story, an individual said they thought the main character was a douchebag. Turns out the author was writing a memoir, not a fictional short story! :lol

Note to self and others: don't eat a lunch of microwave Chinese noodles with cabbage and other veggies while reading the unveiling scene in Braunbeck's "Prodigal Blues". Jeez, the last time I was grossed out by a book was the "Manburger" chapter in Ed Lee's "Portrait of the Psychopath as a Young Woman" while eating Taco Bell's pintos and cheese, and that was almost 13 years ago.

Prodigal Blues is one of the best horror novels ever written. It is Braunbeck's masterpiece and is as creepy as it gets and is scary as hell.

Just finished the Cyprus Grove trio of books about Turner, the former detective, inmate, counselor, and all around guy you do not want coming after you if you did a bad thing. James Sallis is the writer, someone I remember as an excellent poet and story writer from the 1960-70s in that SF speculative fiction thing going on then. Highly highly recommended for anyone who likes Southern (Arkansas) murder suspense stuff. You can get all three books in a Kindle package for under $8.

I really dug the Turner trilogy. I keep hoping the attention Sallis received for DRIVE will get readers interested in some of his older titles. His latest, DRIVEN, is a sequel to DRIVE, and has an almost existential air to it.

I'm on one of my James Thurber kicks. I just finished "The Thurber Carnival" and have begun "The Years With Ross." "Lanterns and Lances" is next. All hardcovers collected from library sales.

Reading Samhain, and boy oh boy, is this novel both good and very extreme. Normally I don't read stuff this gross, but the plot is full of ghouls and beasties. I do confess to reading over a rape scene, I hate those scenes in books.

"Nightfall" by David Goodis, a noir crime novel from 1947. I finished his "Dark Passage" and just fell into this one. I love this style of writing. Lucky for me there are a dozen or more of his novels out there, waiting.

Niall Ferguson, Civilization, The West and the Rest. By far one of the more interesting, accessible historians out there though I don't always agree with his conclusions.
