Oh, for crying out loud...

This afternoon I did what I hoped was a final read through of part one of my splendid and fabulous vampire adventure. Having already gone through it again and again and again, I thought I'd caught every single typo and then some. Until I came across a section where our not-so-humble hero is about to do something despicable to his diminutive, besotted companion -
"... locked his fingers in thick strands of jet back hair ..." :lol

Just one word, and I've turned the gentle, fragile Tobias into Bigfoot.

One reason why I never read my stuff after it is published is because I don't want to find those typos or errors that every pair of eyes who wrote/copyedited/proofed/published missed. It happens, I think, no matter how many people check.

I am always amazed when I read a novel from a big publisher and it has a typo in it. And the thing is, a typo can take me right out of the story and it usually pisses me off if I am really digging the story and it comes at a crucial scene. There was a typo in Kin that knocked me right out of the story and it really got me angry because I was so into the scene.

I strongly suspect Sod's Law dictates that, if there's gonna be an overlooked typo, it'll always be nestled somewhere in a poignant scene, and never in one of those transitional scenes like "... he paked the car and headed toward the building ..."

Bad as that is, it has nowhere near the impact as the one I discovered. Grrrrr... and now I'm wondering how many more of the little buggers are in there.

Hey, SyFy Channel, two words for you. Fuck and you. I'm now beyond convinced that whoever's running that channel couldn't find his/her own ass with both hands, a flashlight, a road map and a three day head start. Damn morons.

How can you even watch that channel with all those commercials?

I'm not going to watch much more of it because they keep cancelling shows I like. It was much better several years ago when it was SciFi Channel and they left shows on to build an audience. Now they're as bad as every other channel.

I'm going to be very happy once I figure out when and where I'm going to move.

She needs to have a breast reduction surgery. In order to get it, she needed to lose about 10-15 pounds. In order to do that, she needed to quit drinking; which she did. Because she couldn't drink, she decided to use synthetic pot. First couple times she used it, she ended up vomiting and she told me that she ate something bad for lunch. Then I came home and I thought she was having a seizure. It was just the effect of the stuff she was smoking because she got up and stopped me from calling 911. So I moved her into the spare bedroom. She fought and cried and told me that she was quitting. She lied. Thursday night, I was fixed dinner and sat down to watch tv when I heard a crashing sound from her room. I ran in there and she was choking on her vomit and as far as I could tell, she was having a stroke. I called 911 and they took her to the hospital. All she remembers is sitting down to eat and then she's in the ambulance. She checked herself out of the hospital before the tests results came back, so I have no idea if she had a seizure or a stroke. On our way home, she's crying and telling me how sorry she is and that as soon as we get home she's getting rid of it. I asked her point blank if she was going to throw it in the trash. She says yes. What does she do? She goes in and lights up. Last night got really bad to the point that I damn near hit her. I went to bed and I wake up to someone hitting the screen door. We live on the second floor and our screen door is on the balcony. She's fully dressed, car keys in hand, and so far out of it that all she can say is "What?" and "Look!". I open the door to pull her inside and she almost takes a header over the railing. This morning she came in and accused me of stealing her car keys and when I explained why I had them, she told me I was making it up. Her phone has a video recorder on it, mine doesn't. I've recorded a couple of her fits when she's smoked whatever it is and I've tried to show it to her when she's sober. She won't watch it, she'll erase it. I've been talking to her family about them coming and getting her because I can't handle this. But no one has the money because her folks are going through a divorce and her sister just bought her own place. She's blaming me because I said "You need to quit drinking or else..." Context: Her losing weight. I just left off the part about her not getting the surgery. She took it to mean that I was going to file for divorce.

I'm to the point that I don't want to come home cause I'm scared I'm going to find her dead. She knows what this is doing, but she simply doesn't care. I could have her arrested for possession but the stuff she's smoking is totally legal. You can buy that crap over the counter where ever cigarettes are sold. I'm going to talk to a friend of mine about getting a place together. I don't know what else to do because she keeps telling me she's going to quit, but...

Victor, I'm so sorry your wife is going through this, and I'm sorry you're having to bear the brunt of it.

As a species we're so finely tuned, and it doesn't take much to throw our body and brain chemistry out of whack. Shock, physical or mental trauma, fear, stress overload. It can be sudden, or maybe we've always been like that, or it can build up for years while we cling to mechanisms we've created in order to cope - booze, sex, smokes, food, rushes of adrenalin, drugs, fist fights, multiple marriages, washing our hands two hundred times a day, shopping. Then someone comes along and wants to take one or more of those coping mechanisms away, and the stress gets worse because we don't know how the hell we're going to live without them.

The trick is to get to the source; what's really throwing her off balance? It won't be easy to get to the root of the matter and once again I'm sorry. This must be really tough.

I came into work this morning and the offices were flooded. A pipe burst over the weekend and everything is a soaking wet mess. We got people in trying to get the water out and they just finished with my office. Man, the shit you find behind file cabinets.

More writer whine -

FINALLY! I got into the groove with the major edit of the sequel to Blood Paternal, and about freakin' time. And so far, thankfully, it isn't as big a mess as I thought. I worked so hard (as did others, to whom I'm so very grateful) at bringing the first one (and Carousel) up to something near publishable, I thought I was never going to get here.

Also, not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but I appear to have similar themes running through my stories. Brothers in conflict (that's a big one, and I've no idea where it comes from). Shifting perceptions, allowing characters to step into other worlds. Nothing astounding and new, but I suppose the trick is - not to write the same story over and over.
