Foremost, thank you all for your positive wishes regarding the situation with my mother. I'm returning to MD tomorrow, this time to begin preparing the house to sell (will cost 10k but I thought it would cost 30k!); then to talk to my mother's physician to see if he'll clear her for travel. The lawyer down here assures me that it's to my and my mother's benefit to move her to FL; for one thing, the nursing homes are 3k per month cheaper, which means her money last much longer. Then I wouldn't have to make these constant, money-eating trips back and forth to see her. Plus--and this this is the dilemma--there is much in the law that allows a person's assets to be sheltered but quite a bit of it seems unethical. That's my current quandary; it'll be interesting to wrestle with. (For instance, I can spend 50k of my mother's money to buy handicap eqiupped vehicle to take m mother to dr's appoints knowing full well that when she dies, I would inherit the vehicle and be able to sell it!) The question is: is this right? Hmm.
I've given up the idea of a garage sale cos it's too much pain in the butt for too little reward. I'll sell what I can to the shylock antique dealer and leave the rest for the people who're gonna fix up and clean the house. I also gotta go through the DOZENS of boxes of books I've had in storage there for years. I also have to have a "burn party": I buy a bushel of crabs, some beer, and invite friends over to help me burn old family papers, records, tax forms, etc. I will also make sure that HEADER is on the dvd player when this happens!
At any rate, my work is cut out for me!
Additional good news is that my lawyer friend has effectively gotten all the rights to my Leisure books reverted back to me. This is GREAT news! Even though the books are old I hate the idea of them sitting in legal limbo due to the "wieldiness" of a book company that has become dishonest in the final throes of its failure. Witch Water will now be a Necro trade paperback, in other words. Eventually i hope for my entire backlist to be available again as trade pb's. And they'll al be on Amazon again as Kindles but through Necro, not Dorchester.
It's also possible that, during a future trip, Brian Keene and friends may be able to drive to my mother's house for a crab party. I'm hoping that my girlfriend will be able to be there too, if her kid schedule permits. This would be so cool. This year the blue crabs in MD have been consistantly HUGE.
On the bad side, I still have gotten any new work done on Header 3 and I suspect I wont until my mother's situation is stablized. But once it is, man oh man, am I gonna kick ass. I've got aat least five years worth of work, probably ten, outlined and ready to go. I can't wait to get writing again.
That's it for now. Thank you, all of you; and take care and be well! Sincerely, Edward Lee
I think I speak for all of us when I say good luck with it all, Lee. You are such an incredible guy and it is a pleasure to be able to talk to you. Thank you for keeping us posted. And don't worry about HEADER 3 right now. We will all be here (I hope so!) when it gets done.

Thanks for the update, Lee, and best wishes on the situation with your Mom. God only knows how hard and stressful this has been, with all the trips back and forth to MD, no wonder writing has been difficult. Looking forward to future books when things get settled for you, man, and always good to know your backlist will be getting reissued by such great proprietors like Necro, etc. You mention Kindle and since I use Nook on occasion, I would imagine any future stuff will still be available through bn.com, as well, right?
Take care, be well...
Chris PS--PLEASE post a few pics from the Header party!
One thing you might want to think of doing is, after you have removed your books and items you want to keep, contact an Estate Sale company for the contents of your mother's house. They'll take a big chunk of the sales, but a small chunk of the proceeds of the entire house will go farther towards your mother's ongoing bills than a pittiance for a few items from an antique dealer would. The company would handle the sale and cataloging, so that would be less of a burden on you.
Regardless of that, I hope things go as well as possible for you with this. My mother has gone though several strokes, and I have moved back to help out, so I have a limited idea of what you are going through. Thankfully, my mother's situation is nowhere near as sever as yours, but there are enough similarities for my heart to go out to you during these times.
Good luck Ed! Even though we might seem like a strange lot to some people, we are still people. We care about you and will be patiently waiting for more depravity!
Thanks, all, for your good wishes. I've already sold more stuff to the antique dealer so I don't think there's enough left for an estate sale. I've cut a deal for a lower price with the contractor who is doing the refurbishment; I get a better price and he gets the stuff of value that remains in the house. Saves me several grand. The big kick in the ass, however, is I gotta buy a new in-wall oven cos this one is busted. The damn things cost $750! Oh, well. I'm coming back to FL for a week tomorow (the weather has SUCKED in MD this whole trip. Maryland SUCKS--except for the seafood!) Ive gotten a lot done on this trip, which is a Godsend. I'll be back on the board in a few days. Thanks, allof you!
Good luck with everything, Ed! We just got back to MD after spending a week in San Diego and I definitely agree, it sucks! I think if we moved, we would definitely miss the crabs - they just aren't the same anywhere else.
Also, I finally started reading Lucifer's Lottery and I'm digging it. Thanks so much for the acknowledgement!

Or gee, Lee could always lower the price of all his books so EVERYONE could afford to buy them...hmm, yeah, that's a plan, right?
I wouldn't sweat it, Lee, honestly, and I think with all the time and expense you've invested in going back and forth to MD all these months taking care of your Mom (as any son would and should do), I don't think anyone would think poorly of you for selling something you would at some point have no use for. And nothing wrong with donations, either.
Believe me, I've already donated quite a bit of stuff to various charities. And I found a fantastic thing in Annapolis called Books for International Goodwill; I've made multiple trips there plus salvation army. To the latter I donated some fairly valuable things.
I am looking forward to donating some valuable genetic material to a local entrepeneur. Her business model shows great upward tendencies in a wildy swinging market.
Not sure if people are missing the point of my post or not? Just offering an idea. As someone who has seen the money struggles of people on disability, Mr. Lee's struggle with the ethics of protecting his mothers money, I simply wanted to offer what I believe to be a great solution.
Take it for what its worth. Just a option to deal with the ethics of protecting money, and helping others.
